Vermont just replaced its only only nuclear reactor (which had accounted for 71.8% of the state’s electricity production) with fossil fuels obtained from fracking

For the past 42 years, Vermont’s only nuclear power plant was responsible for 71.8% of the state’s electricity production. This huge amount of electricity was generated by a single nuclear reactor.

Vermont has just shut down this reactor.

The replacement energy source for this shut down reactor is shale gas, a fossil fuel whose combustion causes global warming, and which is obtained from fracking.

And all this time, I had thought that liberals in Vermont were against fossil fuels, fracking, and global warming.

Meanwhile, France, which gets 80% of its electricity from nuclear power, has the cleanest air in the industrialized world, and the cheapest electricity in Europe.

There are new nuclear power plants currently under construction in the U.S., but all of them are in Georgia, South Carolina, and Tennessee, which are not exactly thought of as bastions of liberalism and environmentalism.

. . .Vermont Yankee, a safe and reliable nuclear plant that had its operating license renewed in 2011 and would have provided Vermont with its cheapest power for the next 20 years, is being shut down prematurely. Never mind that this is a nuclear plant that has kept electricity prices lower than they otherwise would be without it and avoids 2 million metric tons of carbon dioxide a year.

The economic impact of Vermont Yankee's impending loss transcends state lines. Ratepayers in western Massachusetts and across the border in New Hampshire have been told to expect sharp increases in electricity prices. Utility officials in both states blamed the increases on Vermont Yankee's shutdown. And if New England's other nuclear plants are shuttered, Vermonters are likely to see a jump in their own electricity bills that would come on top of the still-to-be determined cost of Vermont Yankee's loss. . .

If the whole country starts generating electricity with natural gas as well as using it for heating and transportation and distribution overseas, it probably won’t stay relatively inexpensive for long. Natural gas prices dived with fracking. Prior to fracking, natural gas had gotten pretty expensive.

Vermont Yankee was part of the New England’s nuclear policy in the 70s and 80s. Now most of them is shut down.

According to liberals, burning fossil fuels causes global warming. Therefore, liberals, by switching from nuclear to fossil fuels, are in favor of global warming.

Thanks. There are lots of great ideas for new kinds of reactors, which are far better and safer than the older ones.

I've heard the theory that it comes from below the surface of the earth, and is in constant production, and is, therefore renewable. Perhaps that explains why "peak oil" was such a bad prediction.

However, I think it's a fossil fuel.

The stuff is perfectly safe if converted to anhydrous dihydrogen monoxide. You can actually breath it and it won’t hurt you.
