Who gets shot in Chicago?

Sociology, which is sometimes defined as the painful and tedious explication of the obvious, occasionally comes up with useful insights, or at least proof that some useful insights are true. That seems to be the case with a study by Yale sociologist Andrew Papachristos, published in the academic journal Social Science & Medicine, and featured in the Chicago Sun-Times.

It turns out that being arrested with someone else is the best predictor of who will get shot in Chicago. No, not by the police, as the Al Sharptons of the world would like to claim. Shot by another civilian, in the epidemic of shootings that have made Chicago at some times more dangerous than Baghdad.

If you and another person get arrested together in Chicago, you’re both part of a loose network of people with a high risk of getting shot in the future, Yale University researchers say in a newly published study.

Only 6 percent of the people in Chicago between 2006 and 2012 were listed on arrest reports as co-offenders in crimes, the study says. But those people became the victims of 70 percent of the nonfatal shootings in the city over the same period.

Many other studies of crime have discovered that a relatively small group of people account for a very large share of the crime.

Unfortunately, there are those who specialize in making it difficult for police to concentrate their resources where they are most needed.

Yeah, like stop and frisk.

Libs love criminals until they become their victims.

I emailed Mayor Rhambo and asked him to send the Million Moms for Gun Sense (conveniently located nearby here in Indiana) and his pal Baraq’s ATF into the Chicago ghetto to clean out the illegal guns.

So far, no response.

Black lives matter ..... except in Chicago where nobody (Jackson, Sharpton, Lefties) protest the loss of those Black lives.

Its the truth. I watched a black Wall St Journal writer speak at Hillsdale college a couple weeks ago. He stated that 98% of blacks killed by guns are killed by other blacks. Police accounted for 2% of the shootings despite the fact that blacks were 6 times as likely to shoot at police as whites were.

A while back our local newspaper showed that more than 90% of the violent crimes in the small city near me were committed in a 10 square block area.

To answer the question posed in the title of the article, the correct answer would be Clam Diggers.

Yep. Some neighbors, 1 in 30 young black men will be dead within a decade, and I forget how many more (7?) will have survived being shot or seriously wounded. Other neighborhoods in the same city, the death toll is considerably lower than the national average. Nowadays it's fairly easy to track down that info.

I always kind of roll my eyes when someone says, "I would never go to Chicago/Orlando/D.C./where ever because of the crime there." Just about every big city has some area with high crime, and also areas that are pretty safe. My son likes cities and has traveled the U.S. on his own since he was 18. I always sit down with him and tell him what parts of the city he can and cannot go.

He ignored my advice ONCE, early on during a day visit to Chicago; a big guy who fortunately relied on intimidation rather than violence tried to rob him pretty much as soon as my son got off the train. My son immediately turned and headed back and managed to catch another train before things got out of hand. This was in broad daylight and fortunately there were other people around, which I'm sure helped, but my son's taken my warnings about areas he should avoid a lot more seriously since!

Even Detroit has many very safe areas and a lot of areas that are as safe as you make them through your own behavior. It helps that you can open carry and stand your ground in Detroit but most places are as safe as you make them.

Simple awareness of your surroundings is half the battle.

Detroit has some areas that are safe. It also has some areas I wouldn’t go into unless I had a gun and a baseball bat. The trick is knowing which is which. I once got a flat tire on St. Aubin just off of I -75. NASCAR pit crews would be jealous of how fast I changed that tire.
