Incestuous Washington Publication Bravely Reports on Washington Incestuousness
by BRENDAN BORDELON April 17, 2015 Politico ran a lengthy piece revealing the romantic relationship between House Transportation Committee chairman Bill Shuster and Shelley Rubino, a high-powered airline-industry lobbyist. The story’s length, prominent placement, and breathless tone raised more than a few eyebrows, given that legal experts interviewed for the piece say the relationship “would not appear to violate ethics laws.”
But there’s another reason the piece warrants a double-take: For all the hand-wringing over romantic relationships between politicians and lobbyists, the reporters and staff of Politico itself, as much if not more so than those at other media outlets, are quite cozy with D.C. lobbyists and political staffers. Jake Sherman, one of Politico’s congressional reporters who co-authored the Shuster piece, is married to an employee of a prominent Washington lobbying firm. Sherman married Irene Jefferson, a lawyer in the lobbying office of Washington firm DLA Piper, in February 2015. Jefferson (now Sherman) previously worked as a staffer for former Democratic representative Jane Harman of California.

We could always make it so that there is NO DATING in Washington, and any spouse has to live in another city, or can’t work for or volunteer with anyone else.
