The Slow Death of Common Core

Common Core teaches collectivism—socialism—and degrades various elements of education from math to English to science

Think about the major policy undertakings of the Obama administration over the past six and a half years. It began with a “stimulus” that wasted trillions in the quest of generating jobs, but did little to nothing in achieving that goal. That was followed by ObamaCare which most agree has been a disaster for the nation’s healthcare sector and, finally, Common Core, a one-size-fits-all testing program intended, we were told, to improve learning standards in the nation’s schools. The only thing it has achieved is the opposition of parents, teachers unions, and entire states.

In the April edition of The Heartland Institute’s School Reform News, one could find headlines that included “Arizona House Votes to Repeal and Replace Common Core”, “Arizona House Votes to Repeal Common Core”, ”West Virginia House Passes Common Core Repeal Bill”, and “Ohio Bill Would Protect Students Opting Out of Common Core Tests.” In March, some 19 states had introduced legislation to either halt or replace Common Core. Do you see a trend here?

“Jeb Bush seems to like it just fine.”, follow the money. Jebby could NEVER do a REAL Job(like Grandaddy, Daddy, and Brother) so he has to come up with BS “schemes” like THIS!

I’m a Civil Engineer. I graduated college with a 97 percentile in math. Common Core mathematics is not an efficient way of solving problems and is the most retarded thing I’ve ever seen.

If it degrades the foundation and formula of the greatest experiment ever, then the elites will insist common core stay in place.

I wonder if Jeb Bush would approve of the votes being counted using common core math.

Education Czar is Cass Sunstein.

No need to say more. Oh wait, there is. He is married to Samantha Power.

Jeb Bush is collecting tons of cash to feather his own nest. He knows he will never be president. Those contributing to his retirement scheme must be stupid or owe a favor to presidents #41 and #43.

It fits the "Agenda 21" playbook just fine.

Even if you weren’t a civil engineer, you would be spot on in your analysis. I’m not an engineer precisely because I grew up without an affinity for math. Time speed distance calculations were adequate for piloting.

Regardless of perceived benefit or lack of with common core, the way it found its way into our education system is enough reason to categorically reject it.

Jeb Bush is heavily “invested” in its success. I WILL NOT support Jeb Bush for president on this issue alone.

Common Core is pure socialism and promotes “collective” thinking....I.E. Marxism. Remember Hillery’s “It takes a village.”

Common Core is not the only education problem destroying our Education system. It is the publishing houses who are printing the books that our children are required to use. Each and every TEXTBOOK in our vast school systems needs to be vetted for truth of FACTS. Our children are being INDOCTRINATED not TAUGHT. This needs to STOP NOW.....or there will be no (formerly) Greatest Nation to save.

I have an idea. Let’s replace Common Core with The Three R’s. At least I learned the difference between “there”’ “their”, and “they’re.”

Legislature’s Education Committee votes to drop Maine’s standardized test

The new Smarter Balanced assessment tests are aligned with the Common Core standards, which have drawn opposition.
BY KEVIN MILLER STAFF WRITER
May 18, 2015

AUGUSTA — Members of a legislative committee on Monday overwhelmingly opposed eliminating the Common Core education standards in Maine schools but endorsed a bill that would require the state to drop a current standardized test that is aligned with Common Core.

The Common Core bill, L.D. 1396, is part of a nationwide movement led by critics of the national educational standards for math and English that have been adopted by 45 states since 2009. Several states have since withdrawn from the program, amid concerns about the content and opposition by some to the trend toward nationalized education.

After hearing hours of testimony last week, members of the Legislature’s Education and Cultural Affairs Committee voted 12-1 on Monday to reject the bill to withdraw Maine from the Common Core standards. The bill was sponsored by Rep. Karen Gerrish, R-Lebanon.

Committee members voted 9-4 to reject another bill, L.D. 695, which would require the Maine Department of Education to notify parents of their right to opt out of standardized tests for their children.

Lawmakers did endorse a bill that would direct the Department of Education to explore a new set of standardized tests.

In March, Maine students began taking a new state assessment test known as the Smarter Balanced test, which is aligned with the new Common Core state standards. Maine is one of 18 states participating in the Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium that created the online tests. But some have criticized the tests.

L.D. 1276, which was endorsed by the committee by a unanimous vote, directs Maine to withdraw from the Smarter Balanced consortium and instead solicit proposals for new tests created with more input from educators and the public.

Legislators on the education committee had heard eight hours of public testimony last Monday from people expressing support for eliminating Common Core education standards, dropping the annual Smarter Balanced tests, and easing the new, more rigorous proficiency-based graduation standards.

Lois Kilby-Chesley, president of the teachers union and advocacy organization Maine Education Association, said she was “ecstatic” at the committee’s vote on the Smarter Balanced tests.

TEACHERS’ ADVOCATE ‘ECSTATIC’
“The Maine Education Association has been wary of the Smarter Balanced Assessment since it was selected by the state,” Kilby-Chesley said in a statement. “For more than a year we have heard stories as to the pitfalls of the test, as well as the errors in it that confuse students and make taking the test a stressful and frustrating event.”

The education committee also unanimously supported a bill to create a 15-member working group to explore how to move ahead with the state’s plans for “standards-based diplomas” aimed at ensuring students are proficient in key subject areas before graduating.

“There are some major issues that need to be addressed before standards based is adopted fully throughout Maine, and I’m glad the committee recognizes this urgency.” Senate Democratic Leader Justin Alfond of Portland, the bill’s sponsor, said in a statement. “The transition from students sitting in their seats and getting a grade to showing proficiency is difficult and this stakeholder group is crucial to keeping momentum statewide.”

The bills now go to the full Legislature for consideration.

“If it degrades the foundation and formula of the greatest experiment ever, then the elites will insist common core stay in place.”

That is true. The diehards will insist that it stay in place but if all states reject it, then it is essentially ‘dead’. I suppose that blue states will accept it to get the bucks from the feds but if only a few states accept it then it will still be ‘dead’ in all of the red states that do not need the fed bucks or are simply repulsed by the socialism.

I can report most teachers I know, including myself, hate Common Core with a vengeance. we ignore it when we can get away with it and otherwise do the minimum to not get fired. We test about 4 months a year. Yes that is correct. The kids are so burned out it is not funny.
I hate the fact that we barely get started and we have the disruption of testing. The students hate it also. They get to the point where they just put anything just to get it over with. I can't blame them.
The idiocy is the tests are all or nothing and MY job is determined by how my burned out students do on a test that many know means nothing to them. We have special education students that are required to test but NOT REQUIRED TO PASS THE TEST. I'm not kidding. Most people don't have a clue what is going on in education. Oh and I am responsible for their grade. All you teacher haters let me see you handle that one. Our local state senator is trying to kill Common Core in our state but the big money interests are hard to fight. I only have to hold out five more years but I feel so sorry for my students who have to put up with this foolishness.
I urge all FReepers to become informed on this issue.
