been waiting 15 years for the obvious scientific result: medical marijuana is at best a placebo.

Good Grief, something so poorly written trying to mask itself as intelligent and authoritative.

Not smoking cannabis hasn’t made this idiot a better writer.

My neighbor got a prescription for marijuana to ease his blood pressure. He is growing it in his backyard and it is doing very nicely. I tried the same excuse with my doc and he would not go for it. Sheesh, when you actually need a liberal....where are they?

By that logic aspirin and acetaminophen aren’t “medicines” either.

The study says that they found either no improvement or little improvement for many of the conditions marijuana is approved to treat. It also says there is little quality data available to say one way or another. What is clear is that the study concluded marijuana was effective at treating chronic pain and muscle soreness from conditions like MS. Basically the most a drug warrior can take from this study is that marijuana is far from being proven the miracle drug it’s proponents claim.

Given that marijuana is proven to lessen the pain of horrible diseases such as cancer, the headline is a lie and the author is a liar. I guess truth doesn’t matter when you are an ideologue with a blog to pimp.

Not every drug helps every person... I know quite a few people who literally use it to control chronic pain... it has fewer side effects than high dosage pharma pain control meds.. and isn’t addictive. It’s particularly useful for chronic pain that travels the vagus nerve... like gastric pain.

There’s another article about the study linked from Drudge, so many millions around the world have also seen the news.

So the trillion dollar pharmaceutical industry adjusted definitions of proof enough to get a study made that has determined that marijuana is ineffective for literally anything, and a hundred million people are simply liars.

Well, that’s that, then.

:snort:

Was that study done by government supported scientists like the ones predicting Global Warming?

I recall my mother’s predicament: To avoid sugar, she used sacharin (sp). But then the gubmint warned against its use. So she switched to nutrasweet. Later, the gibmint recinded their warnng on sacharin.

Who do I believe? Not gubmint researchers.

When a child goes from 25 seizures per day to 2-3 per day using marijuana, then something beneficial has happened.

Answer this drug warriors: Do you think the Federal government has a right to tell you what you may or may not consume? If you do, please tell me where in the Constitution that government right is located.

I clicked through to the AP story the guy quotes and then to the actual JAMA abstract. That says:
Compared with placebo, cannabinoids were associated with a greater average number of patients showing a complete nausea and vomiting response (47% vs 20%; odds ratio [OR], 3.82 [95% CI, 1.55-9.42]; 3 trials), reduction in pain (37% vs 31%; OR, 1.41 [95% CI, 0.99-2.00]; 8 trials), a greater average reduction in numerical rating scale pain assessment (on a 0-10-point scale; weighted mean difference [WMD], −0.46 [95% CI, −0.80 to −0.11]; 6 trials), and average reduction in the Ashworth spasticity scale (WMD, −0.36 [95% CI, −0.69 to −0.05]; 7 trials).
I don't know, that looks pretty good to me. I don't know what all the numbers mean, though. Anybody who does: it say there was a "a greater average number of patients showing a complete nausea and vomiting response" and an "average reduction in the Ashworth spasticity scale." But the conclusion says "There was moderate-quality evidence to support the use of cannabinoids for the treatment of chronic pain and spasticity. There was low-quality evidence suggesting that cannabinoids were associated with improvements in nausea and vomiting..." How does "greater average number" turn into low-quality evidence, while "average reduction" turns into moderate-quality evidence?

I don’t buy this at all. I am not sure there have been any comprehensive studies done that prove it one way or another.

A new study funded by big Pharm by chance?

It’s nearly impossible to get federal approval for any studies of beneficial effects of cannabis, very easy to get approval for studies of harmful effects. So there are at least 20 studies looking for negative effects for every one looking at benefits. Small wonder they found little confirming evidence.

Then there’s this brilliant bit...

“But wait, you say. There is evidence it works for “chronic pain”! The study says so!

Of course it does. The same morons who claimed to have “chronic pain” - which no one can prove or disprove - now claim the pot is making them feel better. In the meantime, when it comes to real, clinically recognized conditions, it does little or nothing to help.”

So everyone with chronic pain is a moron who is faking it? I guess we can get rid of oxycontin, Vicodin, tramadol, and all the rest of big pharm’s addictive, deadly painkillers. Certainly can’t trust people who prefer a much safer, non-addictive alterative to know what helps them. The author in his wisdom knows better.

I love when the ignorant appoint themselves experts.
