Calls made for England to boycott 2018 World Cup as campaigners slam Russia's racism record

Leading anti-discrimination campaigners issued a stinging attack on Russia’s racism record on Saturday night and said England should boycott the 2018 World Cup if they qualify unless the situation improves.

Brazilian striker Hulk, Russian football’s record signing, was pulled out of yesterday’s draw ceremony for what organisers said were ‘purely sporting reasons’ in order to play for Zenit St Petersburg.

But just days earlier, Hulk said racism happens at ‘almost every game’ in the Russian league and was a genuine threat to the World Cup.

Meanwhile, Ghanaian officials condemned the ‘vile racist abuse’ meted out to former Arsenal midfielder Emmanuel Frimpong who was verbally insulted on the first day of this season’s Russian league.

Frimpong was sent off for making a middle-finger gesture triggered, he said, by monkey chants, to which the Russian authorities turned a blind eye even though they were clearly audible. Manchester City’s Yaya Toure has also suffered verbal abuse while playing in Russia and last night, Kick It Out chairman Lord Ouseley said the time had come to make a stand.

‘There is a real threat in terms of black players going to the World Cup from here and other countries being abused,’ he told the Mail on Sunday. ‘We also have concerns about the level of homophobia and how it’s allowed to flourish.

Here’s an idea: Shut up and beat them on the field of play.

That way, you won’t have to worry about any rants going forward.

No one would care if England boycotted the Cup. They haven’t managed to field a team worth a bent farthing in the last 20 years anyway. Did they even make it out of the prelims last time? Or did they get beat by Moldava or Borneo again?

Jimmy Carter’s 1980 Olympic boycott really showed the Russians how tough he could be,

I think it is good that Russia has the World Cup. Knowing Russia they’ll waste an enormous amount of money to host it and this is the money they then can’t use for doing their evil deeds around the world.
