“I may be wrong about this, but I think in New Orleans/Louisiana, there is a gumbo or other stew based around the bones of a turkey. Not sure, but I thought that was the case.”

I don’t see why not. Gumbo is what I’ll be making with my turkey broth.

My wife and I have been doing this for years. Turkey is not just for Thanksgiving!

From October to about end of March, we usually cook a bird every weekend. By Monday, we have the carcass in a big pot and make soup out of it which will last us through Thursday. Friday night it our night to go to a restaurant and splurge a little.

Turkey or Chicken soup never gets tired when it's cold outside. Sometimes we throw pasta in there, or rice. Acine de pepe is especially good in soup. Lots of vegetables and sometimes potatoes. The small red ones.

I haven't had a cold or flu in about 30 years. I think all the soup has to do with that.

Regarding Dukakis, somebody got it right above. Democrats are very stingy when it's their own money at stake. They throw around nickels like they are manhole covers. But when it's taxpayer money, they will shovel it into the furnace.

Dukakis is right about those big BBQ chickens - they will make 10 meals for a couple. And you can't find a better bargain in the market - $4.95 for a 3+ lb. cooked chicken. I buy at least 1 per week and eat little other meat.

Yeah, but that's for us working people who earn our money. For those on food stamps and welfare, they'd never go through that kind of trouble.

True enough; and some of the best coffee I’ve had is brewed at a gourmet hamburger joint that buys it from Costco.

It isn’t thriftiness that’s his problem...

Think how things would have changed if Dukakis won. No Bush 41 tearing down Reagan’s accomplishments. No Bush-Clinton NWO alliance. Possibly, a conservative would defeat Dukakis in 1992 and direct the tech revolution. No NAFTA. No Clinton selling America’s technology to the Chinese and North Korea. No stabbing our Slav friends in the Balkans. Possible Russia-America alliance.
Dukakis was a little left but he corralled the Moonbats and had some pragmatic ideas.
I guess what I’m saying is I never liked the Bushes going back to their Nazi days.

I was working at General Motors Framingham Ma, Duke came through for something (probably election time).

The union rep for the department came up to shake his hand and said, I think your increased tax on cigarettes is great... I smoke cigars.

(this union reps ‘alternate’ was later caught bringing un-taxed cigarettes from the south)

Oh, the plant also closed

Turkey carcasses. Man, that brings back memories.

Yeah, and the closure of the plant was shortly after GM had dumped $400M into upgrading the plant, too.

I didn’t care for Dukakis and didn’t vote for him, but I buy coffee at Costco (not sure how much it is per cup, but certainly less expensive than if I bought it at Safeway or Starbucks and I like it better than Folgers and others). I haven’t made a turkey in a long time, but used to always make soup from it or a chicken carcass.

I host Christmas Eve dinner every year and do a ham (Kirkland honey-baked, spiral cut from Costco - yum!) since we’ll have turkey the next day. It’s also easy to fix and keep warm while we go to Mass before family comes over for dinner. I usually use the bone to make split pea soup that we have on New Year’s Day watching football. Makes for an easy, no fuss meal with salad and cornbread and everyone can relax and eat when hungry. Christmas cookies and candies for dessert (my sister and I do a marathon baking weekend the weekend prior to Christmas).

True, but Framingham (as other facilities) would have had to make those renovations anyway to continue the same operation since they were mostly pollution oriented and the money had already been allocated.

It was a change to water based paint systems, low VOC.

The renovation(s) were not only to/for a new/separate building for the paint department but also to the body shop for pre-paint ELPO dip tanks (and body shop operations).

Additionally, (and importantly) there was speculation that Framingham would get/change production to the new plastic paneled mini van/wagon.

This speculation was included in the planning of the new paint facility (and all other departments during the whole plant renovation — which I as management worked, was involved in).

Above speculation/GM investment also gave the Mass Government, Framingham government and local UAW 422 union the misguided belief that the plant would not close after such an investment.

As you stated, they were wrong, all of them (even many in management).

I took a buyout option of/for my service in what turned out to be the first of 3 rounds (wisely, since one year later, the buy out money was drastically reduced).

That second round of buyouts also included hourly, some with transfers to other locations, most not.

The third round was the closing (which some still did not believe).

I was also wondering if there might be a possible re-opening of the plant until until Adesa bought it. I was pretty much assured that the facility was done as an auto manufacturing plant.

A neighbor who also had worked there got a job at Adesa. Through him, I was able to visit the ex-auto assembly plant and see my old department, much of the floor area.

The rear wall of part of the plant (including body shop/my dept) had been ripped out and was open to the elements.

Ironically, when I was initially hired as a union laborer, the plant was undergoing renovations in late fall, partly to expand the body shop department. The rear wall then was also torn out, it was VERY cold, the union walked out (my foreman told me NOT to walk out as I had not accrued union seniority and would be fired... he was correct).

The remaining people were given additional coveralls to wear (not that it would help or matter since there weren’t enough people left to man half the stations, regardless of training).

During that short last visit, I was surprised how sad I was to see the state of the plant (working there was a love/hate relationship).

(In my final position, I could enter the plant at any time, with guests and I often did, at all odd hours, days of the week. Security recognized me, knew my name, waved me through. Actions that, upon leaving, I learned earned me notation to the highest level of local management and resulted in them upping all of my appraisals at their level of review). I add this only in regard to the current crop of higher education crybabies... and some nostalgia.

Thanks for the reply and reason to reminisce.

I’d forgotten the name of the (also failed) future vehicle for Framingham/GM and again came across this site:

http://bestride.com/blog/25-years-ago-gm-closed-framingham-assembly/5566/";

You may know of it, others may not.

Not meaning to be intrusive, but are you familiar with GM in other ways?

From the Metro West area? (remember the original Shoppers World?)

Regardless this has been very cathartic for me. Thank You
