aarrgghh I HATE flying dogs & have only helped someone do it once. They were MUCH calmer about it than I was. Pilots for Paws puts the crate in the cockpit, which isn’t nearly as bad as cargo. (Actually, I hate flying, period, & have only flown once- just so I could say I had)
OOF But you’re lucky to be in Cali & spoiled. It’s over 600+ miles RT from my house to the Bay Area in Houston & I used to drive that every week, sometimes a couple of times a week. Sometimes, I miss it. It isn’t bad except in bad weather.
There used to be a lady here who did the long hauls. She lived in Beaumont- or around there & would go up to DFW, pick up a bunch of dogs & then make her way back home down I35 & back through Houston to home. That’s a really LONG trip. She was about the same age. I’m not sure I could have done it.
Our rescue does not normally bring in German shepherds from out of state because on the average there are 125 GSDs on a given day that need to be rescued or adopted in southern CA alone. Between five GSD rescues only half are saved, the rest killed.
Westside GSR of Los Angeles does out of state adoptions. Transportation cost averages $1500 per dog.
