Vanity: Reminder SCOTUS Justice Breyer was also labeled a "centrist" when nominated

I remember when now SCOTUS Justice Stephen Breyer was nominated by Clinton everybody proclaimed him as a "moderate" and "cenrrist". There was some complaining from Leftist groups. But of course, once safely in his lifetime appointment Breyer is just as a reliable a voter for Leftist causes as the rest of them.

For example, LA Times article describing Breyer as "moderate":

here

Another from the Washington Post:

here

Notice how the usual GOPe characters called Breyer a "pragmatist" and "moderate".

The last time a Democratic SCOTUS selection went rogue was Byron White.

Shouldn’t even consider an Obama nominee.

If he were confirmed it’d make the court 44% Jewish.
2% of the population.

Seems a bit over represented!

Even IF he were a moderate, Scalia was a conservative and the Court already was liberal. The Court cannot remain balanced without another conservative.

But Merrick Garland really is a centrist - midway between national socialist and soviet socialist, just like Obama.

BINGO

Of course, WaPo, NYT and Obama himself are all going to hail this guy as a “Moderate.” Why would they say otherwise.

Find some of his more radical decisions on abortion, guns or government social-engineering power and apply some simple, leftist-style slogans to tar him. “War on Babies” or the like.

It's fake conservative code for "flaming liberal," too.

Sorry to be so judgemental of this Justice, but he seems as poster boy for “Low T” medication. We’ve had enough of children, we need an adult. Senator Armstrong nominated my dad to President Reagan in 1981. Too bad my dad didn’t want to leave Colorado for DC. Wish pops was around; he was another Scalia.

I remember Souter and Roberts both being “rock ribbed conservatives.”

I remember the Left going after Souter when he was nominated because he was a lifelong bachelor. They claimed he would be unable to understand “family and women” issues before the SCOTUS. When out of the gate he showed himself to be a Leftist these same groups went quiet.

The Constitution is neither moderate nor centrist, or conservative for that matter. It is what it is (I usually hate that phrase, but...) and must be honored in letter and spirit.

We could hammer this for months when we need the press the most. Obama was only crafty in knowing we would jump on the chance to be tough guys and end up looking like the “obstructionist part” which will feed right into their campaign. This tactic is absurd. A hearing does not equal an appointment. Let’s Bork the SOB. It took over a year for that horror show. THAT would be getting even.

December 19, 2001 The American Prospect listed Merrick Garland as a “First Tier” pick for SCOTUS should Al Gore be President

It’s a pollster original, so you won’t be stepping on any toes by stealing it. Enjoy!

I have no interest in a political Supreme Court “balance”. The only acceptable balance is nine Justices who believe the Constitution means exactly what the words say - no more and no less. I want President Trump to nominate four originalists to the Court in his tenure, all of them under 50 years old, and starting with Ted Cruz.

Let’s replace Scalia with a Justice who has his values. But let’s also replace Kennedy (age 80), Ginsburg (age 83), and Breyer (age 78) with carefully-vetted originalists.
