PANAMA PAPERS: The secrets of dirty money (Iceland Monetary Disaster)
Suddeutsche Zeitung (German, in English) ^ | April 2016 | Frederik Obermaier and Bastian Obermayer

A storm is coming By Frederik Obermaier and Bastian Obermayer

The interrogation room in which Iceland’s recent history was rewritten is sparse, furnished only with a table, some chairs, and a computer. A camera is fixed to the wall, and the frosted, double-glazed windows have completely blocked out the sound of the gale-force winds in Reykjavik’s Faxafloi Bay.

It was in this room that some of Iceland’s most powerful bankers, executives, and investors had to answer to special investigator Olaf Hauksson. A tall man with a heavy build, Haukkson has spent the past six years investigating the transactions that brought Iceland’s economy to its knees in October 2008.

At the time, the country’s three biggest banks folded within just three days, in part because their senior executives had illegally doctored the stock listings of their own banks. “Market manipulation”, as Hauksson curtly calls it.

When asked what happened to the three bank bosses in the end, Hauksson grins. “They all went to jail,” he says, pointing to the empty chairs. “They sat right there.”

Olafur Hauksson has only just begun to wrap up proceedings for the biggest scandal in Iceland’s history. And it’s entirely possible that the publication of the Panama Papers will trigger the next one.

Another storm

The names of several Icelandic public officials show up in the internal documents of Mossack Fonseca (Mossfon), the Panamanian offshore provider. Among them are Prime Minister Sigmundur David Gunnlaugsson, Finance Minister Bjarni Benediktsson, and the Minister of the Interior, Ólöf Nordal. The data reveals that all three politicians have links to anonymous offshore companies, which they have neglected to disclose. The Panama Papers also include the names of Hrólfur Ölvisson, chairman of the prime minister’s Progressive Party, several of Iceland’s wealthiest...

There are 11 million documents released.

Every crook will be exposed, not just the easy targets released so far.

I'll bet the three bank bosses were being coached by our Sec. of State at the time, Hillary Clinton.

Who knows how far these 11 million documents will reach, what other countries banks may be implicated. Anyone know what vulnerabilities US banks might have?

I wonder if the exposure of these paper could trigger the next financial collapse?

From what I have read on the news sites, these documents expose massive illegal activity by the bankster, politicians, business, celebrities, athletes, Wall Street, and the super rich.

If you follow the weekend news....a leak came out over Greece and this gift-money that the EU and IMF is fronting. There’s some belief of a major Greek crisis by June, and the British vote on exiting the EU coming up....will toss the entire global market for a down period. This is probably the start of another crisis period.

It appears the hard drive with the info. started out in 2013. Several bankers in recent years have taken their own lives, related? Something set them off. With so many news organizations in so many countries, this looks interesting.

Mark Twain said “There is no distinctly native American criminal class save Congress”. This seems to hold true world-wide.

Financial privacy is just one aspect of the unalienable right of privacy in “persons and papers”. Most of the issue behind this data breach is motivated by the onerous taxation schemes and corruption of government.

The US government has made it very difficult for a US Person to legally hold assets outside of the US without full reporting and disclosure. But the US tax system does not require that the assets and income of non-US Persons that are held in the US be reported to other governments. So, in effect, the US forbids its own citizens from enjoying financial liberty and privacy but extends it to everyone else. The US really is the world’s largest “tax haven”. Anything to support the US Dollar!

This also has to do with the fact that the US is one of the few countries that taxes the income of citizens no matter where in the world they originated. If I am playing poker on a cruise ship flying a Liberian flag in international waters and I win $100,000, as a US Person, I am required to report that as income to the US government. Should the ship stop at small island nation and I went into town to open a bank account and deposit the money, I am required to report that account and its maximum balance at any time during the year on Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN) Form 114, Report of Foreign Bank and Financial Accounts (FBAR). The fine for failure to report is an automatic $10,000. (Land of the Free! All made possible by a 30 word amendment to the Constitution.)

I noticed that the news stories of the people who were found to be clients of this firm, there was a distinct lack of people from the US. There are very good reasons for that.

Somewhere, avoiding both taxes and extradition, George Soros right now is smiling.

But indeed the wages of sin is death, and the tax rate in Hell is 100%, George.

The problem isn’t that the ruling class seeks financial privacy; the problem is that they believe in privacy for me and not for thee.

There is no freedom without financial privacy.
