Yes, a huge lot of Filipino blood spilled in WWII because the US left 17million people as the equivalent of live bait in the China Sea.
The US insisted on keeping bases there making the country a target and enemy of Japan, while doing a half-assed job of reinforcing it pre-war.
The Philippine government noted that the US would be unable to protect them in spite of their promises, and tried to make a deal with the Japs. Roosevelt squelched it. So we ended up taking a great big one for the team. The Phils was dragged into the war at tremendous cost to it.
This is NOT the popular story of that episode, but it is the true one.
