Taking fire on a Mountain Trail Bike
Cal Sportsman ^ | 10/14/2016 | S Morstan

"On a normal MTB ride in Capitol State Forest, WA, somebody target shooting was "unknowingly" firing across one of the most used trails in the forest. As soon as we realized how close the shots were, we heard at least two zip past just ahead of us seemingly at head level. The sound was apparent and "felt" close, the GoPro barely picked up the audio, so I increased the volume for the first two. With headphones you can hear them in the original clip, prior to me cranking up the volume. After reflecting for a couple days about this incident, we were actually really close to catching a bullet. I kinda regret that we did not confront this person directly with cameras and give them a solid tongue lashing and post their faces to social media, they got off easy. Please learn a lesson from this if you shoot for fun in the forest.”

FYI, I have nothing against guns or target shooting, but this person was breaking multiple rules of recreational shooting and common sense!

Check out the video captured by a GoPro camera mounted on the head of one of the bikers. The bullets happen around one minute in. See it here.

Or, they were REALLY close to someone’s marijuana farm.

I kinda really doubt the target shooting story.

One of the most useful things I think I have ever done is pull targets. Having once heard what a round sounds like from downrange you can rest ASSURRED you will NEVER waste a precious second wondering, “What was that?”

Impossible to determine - seriously. I've been accused of it, and I've been on the receiving end. If you trust the shooter's veracity and figure the angles it can be 45 degrees off. Or even more.

Is hunting allowed in this forest? Is there any open seasons? I’ve seen folks dressed in deer colored coats wandering through the woods during hunting season and they were offended when I told them perhaps an orange vest might be appropriate at that time of year.

Too stupid to live, and apparently willing to remedy that condition.

It’s too bad this mountain-bike twinkie wasn’t brave enough to “confront this person directly with cameras and give them a solid tongue lashing and post their faces to social media”.

The resulting selfie might have been of interest to the twinkie’s proctologist.

Or maybe they were off the trail and trespassing, or maybe locals were d@mned tired of listening to barely muffled two cycle trail bikes ruining their peace and quiet.

Personally I despise the sound.

I used to shoot at a range in Boulder City, NV. We would have mostly off road bikes ignore the signs and cross down range.

Or maybe you didn’t listen to the trail bikers statement or read the transcript and listen to the shooter apologize

Its also too bad the bikers couldn’t see the shooters due to fog and had no idea how far off they were.
Plus if they were stupid enough to shoot with out a backdrop in an area frequented by bikers hikers (pansy or not) no telling what other stupid acts they could be capable of.

Talk is cheap.

RULE 1
ALL GUNS ARE ALWAYS LOADED
The only exception to this occurs when one has a weapon in his hands and he has personally unloaded it for checking. As soon as he puts it down, Rule 1 applies again.

RULE 2
NEVER LET THE MUZZLE COVER ANYTHING YOU ARE NOT PREPARED TO DESTROY
You may not wish to destroy it, but you must be clear in your mind that you are quite ready to if you let that muzzle cover the target. To allow a firearm to point at another human being is a deadly threat, and should always be treated as such.

RULE 3
KEEP YOUR FINGER OFF THE TRIGGER TIL YOUR SIGHTS ARE ON THE TARGET
This we call the Golden Rule because its violation is responsible for about 80 percent of the firearms disasters we read about.

RULE 4
BE SURE OF YOUR TARGET
You never shoot at anything until you have positively identified it. You never fire at a shadow, or a sound, or a suspected presence. You shoot only when you know absolutely what you are shooting at and what is beyond it.

I dislike mountain bikes in that they tear up trails; secondly I’ve almost been run down by one on a trail specifically signed “No Trail Bikes” but yet there they were.

Agreed. The sonic crack of the bullet passing sounds like, well, a gunshot - just without the lower-frequency muzzle "boom". Freaking loud.

We were car camping with some friends at a lake in the National Forest. We had just sat down for dinner and two rounds came ripping through the campsite just overhead. We jumped behind some trees and started yelling. There were some dopes across the lagoon shooting at a log in the lake. The rounds were ricocheting off the water and coming right through or camp. We jumped in our truck and went over there to talk to them. We were pretty pissed but they denied even shooting at all. What can ya do?

A friend and I were walking through a state forest in Louisiana. We were walking in a ravine and all the sudden someone on the other side of the hill opened up with shotguns on the sound of our footsteps. We could hear the pellets hitting the leaves above us.

We left the woods and went fishing instead. I’ve never been mistaken for a Bass, so I figured we would be safer on the lake than in the woods.
