A significant body of thought exists in stating USA had actually gone to DEFCON 2. However, only 3 was publicized as Nixon etal, recalled the Cuban Missile Crisis and all the chaos that ensued. Grocery stores empty. Gun shops sold out of guns/ammo,etc. Much fear in the public mind. So exact status was kept a secret. True? False? I have no way of proving it.

The DEFCON 2 "rumor" got started as a result of USSR moving nukes into Alexandria Harbor. They remained on board tankers. Never off loaded. Had they been off-loaded? SHTF X 10!

Few people know that Cuba sent 4000 soldiers to fight Israel. Several engagements. Casualties. Also N. Korea sent pilots who flew Syrian Aircraft. This entire war could have blown up, literally, the world. Yet it receives short-shrift in history.
