The spectacular week that was

Republican members of Congress met in Philadelphia last weekend for what was called a retreat. It might have been more accurately labeled an advance.

Perhaps not since the days of Franklin Roosevelt’s first term has so much been done by so few that will potentially impact so many (to paraphrase Winston Churchill in a completely different context).

Writing on CNN’s politics page, Stephen Collinson commented: “Forget the first 100 days. It’s only been a week and Donald Trump is reinventing the presidency.”

Given what conservatives consider CNN’s hostility toward Mr. Trump, Mr. Collinson may not have meant it as a compliment.

There are so many issues — from abortion (The March for Life featured Vice President Mike Pence, the highest-ranking White House official to address the march), reinstatement of the Mexico City policy, which forbids the United States from funding any group that provides or promotes abortion overseas, an executive order reviving the Keystone XL....

I still haven't got used to President Trump, and when I watch him speak (this video, from this morning) I have this feeling of foreboding, that "this can't last," that the Democrats are too strong, that the protestors are too much, etc.

But then I remember, it was very much the same when Ronald Reagan first came into office, except there was no internet, no YouTube, no Facebook, etc., etc. But there was protest, the Democrats were awful toward him, they fought him tooth and nail.

But he started to make progress. He did his thing, and the economy began to improve. Our international standing began to improve. The USSR was very unhappy with RWR. Very unhappy. But President Reagan ignored them, and he ignored the Democrats, and he ignored the MSM.

Things didn't begin to get obviously better for about a year and a half, but then you could see it. And the mood in the country really began to change.

President Trump will pull the oxygen away from his critics as things begin to improve in our country. Ordinary people will see it, as they did back in 1982 and 1983, and that will change many things.

The Democrats will always resist, they will always fight dirty. The protestors will always be there. Those who are old enough to remember will recall how the homosexuals tried to basically pin the blame for AIDS on President Reagan. As far as they were concerned, Reagan caused AIDS, every case of AIDS in the United States (and maybe the world) was the direct result of Ronald Reagan's inaction. They never stopped with this. Remember "Luke Sissyfag," hectoring Reagan at public appearances? That is nothing new, and it won't end. The scale of the demonstrations is larger because of social media, and is further amplified by a MSM that has literally become a part of the Democrat-Left, whereas in Reagan's time they tried a little bit to keep it under wraps.

And that’s why hollywierd hates it; they don’t control it.

God I love the smell of victory in the morning, it smells like Trump roasting libtards over an open pit.

Trump feeds the MSM some garbage and they run with it for 3 days. Meanwhile he does 20 other things that gets overlooked, but would garner days and days of negative stories if the media did its job.

You got it! The Internet also plays a big part in giving a voice to those that didn’t have one.
Hard time sleeping tonight so I have C-SPAN on. What a Hoot. Nazi Pelosi, Shumer, and about another 100 Dirty 60’s Commies in front on The Supreme Court. Lol.
Sound system dosent work! Nothing against Old Folks, but these Clowns need to go away. What the H*ll does “This is not what America is about”??
What about Americans? Refugees? Illigals? Is that who these people represent?

Thank you for that great recollection! As you note, it took a couple of years for the average American to say, “Wait a minute — this is WORKING!”

I was in the Presidio of San Francisco and Monterrey in 1983-1984. A year or so ago, one gay person actually told me that the AIDs crisis was Reagans’ fault because Reagan did not send in the National Guard and FORCE the gay’s to stop using the bath houses.

I asked him if the gays would have accepted that action or would they have called Reagan a Hitler. He stated that he would have had no problem with that action. I called him a liar to his face and left the area. The gays did call Reagan “Hitler” when he tried to shut the bath houses and I was there for the riots, burning cars, throwing bricks through business windows, etc.

Except for the tweets, I love it.

Reverse dreamers, start clearing the swamp in the agencies.

Off with their heads! (figuratively speaking of course, this is not a Muslim country)

Yes, I remember, it was hysterical lunacy. The MSM gave it a lot of attention.

Some rather strange things were going on at the Presidio in those days. Were you aware of any of it? Perhaps it was a hoax, I’ve always wondered.

My wife was a medical reservist at the clinic at the Presidio of San Fran and I was a student down in Monterey. It was crazy to be in SF during that period. They were marching around, burning cars and breaking windows, screaming about their civil right to “meet” in bath houses.
