LAFAYETTE, Ind. (Jiji Press) Major Japanese automaker Subaru Corp. said Monday that it plans to hire up to 600 people at a factory in Indiana.
The company will create the jobs in line with its plan to boost the factorys annual production capacity from 394,000 units at present to 436,000 units in the summer of 2018, officials said.
Indiana is the home state of U.S. Vice President Mike Pence, who once served as governor of the U.S. Midwestern state.
As a good corporate citizen, Subaru hopes to contribute to the local economy in terms of employment, according to Subaru President Yasuyuki Yoshinaga.
Under his America first policy, U.S. President Donald Trump has been urging Japanese automakers to increase their production and create more jobs in the United States.
Against this background, Subaru plans to boost the number of its workers at the Indiana plant from some 5,400 to almost 6,000, although the company has not been singled out by Trump for attention.
Subaru enjoyed sales growth in the U.S. market for nine years in a row through 2016.
Subaru produces the Outback sport-utility vehicle and the Legacy sedan at the Indiana plant. It also started manufacturing a new model of its Impreza mainstay passenger car in November last year.
Also at the factory, Subaru plans to make a new SUV with three-row seats for release in 2018. With the plant operating at full capacity, Subaru is facing an urgent need to boost its output capacity.
Lafayette industry employs people from six county area around it. Very good for the state. Purdue sometimes partners with companies to train staff
How many FTE positions for people applying “Coexist” bumper stickers to them?
It is fun to drive by this plant and see acres of new cars waiting to be loaded onto rail cars. It is a unique perspective because there is an overpass right in front of the plant so you are looking down on the cars.
Small town G’ma impressed by simple things.
The one thing I have always liked about Subaru’s are their flat line opposing and reciprocating four cylinder engines. Basically, it’s a water cooled aircraft engine. That, and their putting 4WD in small passenger cars way before AWD became common. Downside is they’re overpriced and suffer from the “Must be a Liberal behind the wheel” stigma, inherited years ago from Volvo
I have not seen this reported in our local media.
Me either.
I absolutely love our Subies but hate that association with Subarus! They cultivated it In the 90s with the “XENA-LVR” license plate in their ads. Thankfully, they’ve switched to dogs. With our first one in 2012, I did ask the dealer if I had to buy the premium audio package to be able to listen to anything other than NPR. He thought I was serious. We will buy the new TriBeCa (the third row seater that they mention for 2018) in a couple of years. Both of our Subarus were made in Indiana and I’m doing my small part to fight “coexist” with a “Peace Through Superior Firepower” sticker on mine!
But after looking at my neighbor's Outback, I bought a new 2013 Outback with the 2.5 motor.
Hands down, of all the cars and trucks I've owned or driven, it's my all time favorite vehicle so far.
I love it. It's a roomy, comfortable, great people, cargo and dog hauler! And even better, it's built in Indiana.
Good for jobs.
But has Subaru fixed the chronic head gasket failure issue that plagued the late ‘90s to early 2000’s vehicles? It is because of that issue that I have avoided even thinking Subaru..
Feel the same way about my 2016 Outback.
Subaru has a terrible reputation for blowing head gaskets, and the engines completely destroy themselves if the timing belt breaks. No thanks...
