Is Glock the Perfect Prepper Handgun?
Am Shooting Journal ^ | 4/12/2017 | K Felts

Posted on 04/12/2017 10:38:18 AM PDT by w1n1

Some preppers talk about the versatility of Glock 17 magazines being able to fit with the Glock 19. This feature is highly desirable for most prepper with survival and limited resources in mind.

The standardization Glock put into place is what makes it a perfect prepper handgun. When it comes to handguns, very few companies have adopted magazine standardization. Glock on the other hand has embraced standardization. This makes Glock ideal for groups.

Take Beretta for example. Beretta is a great handgun, I can not say they follow the same level of standardization as Glock. For example, the Beretta APX will not use 92F magazines. This creates an issue of stockpiling magazines for the same brand name, but different models. What do think? Read the rest of the Glock prepper story here.

Great for SHTF, and a general duty weapon. For fun there is a lot more to choose from.

Too many parts.

Single action revolver is much easier to maintain and will shoot anything that fits.

I think Glocks are best for very well trained shooters.

For the average guy, either a single action auto or one with a long double action or cock the hammer for the first shot.

A decocker is also nice. Probably a Sig P226 is about perfect. Also a bunch of S&W revolvers would fit.

Try shooting 1,000 rds with a Glock one day and try the same with an M&P, Springfield, or Ruger. You’ll know which is the best by the least amount of bruising on your finger.

You can keep your glock. I’m happy to punch seven 1/2” holes in anything or anyone with my Colt 1911 A1. Like our DI’s told us when we asked why we only loaded 18 rounds into our M14 magazines instead of 20 (to protect feed spring). “If you can’t stop them with 18 what good are the other 2 going to do you”?

Depends on the person you are prepping for and who you are prepping against. I would tell you that my in-laws are not able to use a Glock. Wife and daughter struggle due to their small hands / hand strength. I usually prep with AR first and handgun as backup.

Never underestimate magazine-compatibility.

Have a G17 (9mm), a G22 (40cal), and a G30 (45cal). The G17 & G22 are magazine-compatible also with their 2 Keltec Sub2000 folding carbines. Have another 9mm Sub2000 with 92FS mag well compatibility, so obviously I’m getting a Beretta 92FS down the road.

For SHTF, its good to have weapons that can use the most common ammo types: (5.56x45/223, .308/7.62x51, 7.62x39, 9mm, 40S&W, 45ACP & 357mag/38, 22LR & 12-gauge — where the ammo is separated by a slash, the first listing is the more powerful round — you don’t want to fire 308 in something meant for only 7.62x51).

Pairing rifles & pistols is not a bad idea... e.g. a Ruger 10/22 takedown rifle paired with a Ruger Charger pistol (both in 22LR & taking same mags)

The Ruger GP100 stainless 4” barrel .357 (or an SP101) is the perfect prepper gun. No issues with racking a slide, so people with less strength are not left out.

My friend was shooting a G17 at an action pistol style match and realized he hadn’t brought enough magazines to complete the next stage. He found a lady who was shooting G17 magazines in her G19 and didn’t need them all for the stage she was on. She let him borrow one. Try doing that with any other pistol.

The point is that in a limited resource scenario the pistol you are most likely to find parts or magazines for is a Glock. Glocks are ubiquitous and Glock has made it so that lots of parts work on more than one model. I’m also going to advocate for AR’s, Rem 700’s, Rem 870’s on those grounds.

As for people who say you need to have enough training to not shoot yourself with the stupid things. Yes, you need to be well trained with a pistol. Be well trained with a pistol.

Revolvers don’t require magazines, don’t sling brass everywhere, and can be loaded and used by someone with an injured/broken arm.

For real SHTF, I’ll take a revolver.

Yep. Good standard is to check into what your AO will be after SHTF. If your local LEOs have Glocks...get a glock. We have a smorgesborg of LEO pistols around here: M&P, Colt, HK, Sig, Glock....but EVERYONE has Remington 870 SBS (Remington plant here) and M4 from Colt.

My local PD packs Glocks and Tavors.

How's this for a racket -- here in Massachusetts, you can't buy a Glock from a dealer unless you work for the state in some "safety" capacity -- cops, EMTs, firefighters, state attorneys, etc. Us regular schmucks can only get Glocks second-hand from folks who move into the state. The above mentioned state workers aren't supposed to sell their Glocks to peasants in theory, but there's no penalty for doing so. I imagine a fair number of them do a brisk business flipping day-old Glocks.

I like a little more firepower for every day use, but my carry piece for fancy dress-up occasions is an 1849 Colt Pocket Revolver with the sweetest trigger I've ever encountered. Just a whisper and she goes bang. And 164 years later she is still as deadly as the day she was born. Easy to maintain too. Let's see a Glock top that record :)

This year will mark the end of my purchase of weapons, and from then on just stockpiling ammo & mag & optics.

I am going to get one revolver, specifically a 357-magnum Smith & Wesson Model 686 Plus Pro, 7-round cylinder, 5” barrel.

Love my Ruger LCR 38, my first gun.

I was in Cabellas last summer and a customer saw me looking at it and said it was his favorite gun because of the trigger. So I bought it. Glad I did.

I put a Piranha grip on it and a glass tube sight to jazz it up. Fits in my pocket, less than a pound. I’m hitting a 1 foot target at 40 feet, no problem.

After 100 rounds, I feel very comfortable shooting it. I’m new to guns, so it was a very nervous time learning to handle it. Happy I took the plunge. I credit Hillary and Obamas war on cops and middle America for getting me motivated. :)

For me, that depends on how many zombies I'm expecting. For six or fewer, and especially if they are slow-moving enough for me to reload, I'm okay with a revolver (or two!). With larger zombie hordes, I want my Glock, with 17 rounds, or perhaps 33 rounds in the spare magazines. [Kidding - I want an AR if my revolver is not enough.] As a resident of the People's Republic of Maryland, I drive to neighboring states to get standard capacity magazines - legal to possess but cannot be purchased here or shipped here.
