San Diego Unified will kick off its Summer Fun Café lunch program with a barbecue for parents, guardians and children to eat for free at Skyline Hills Community Park on Wednesday.
The barbecue is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. and will include a community resource fair, activities for children, live music, free health screenings, a performance by the Fern Street Circus, fresh fruits and vegetables for families to take home, as well as prize drawings for children, according to a statement from SD Unified.
The Summer Fun Café is an annual summer meal program partnered by the City of San Diego and the San Diego Unified School District to provide healthy meals for children in need during the summer months, according to a statement.
SD Unified Superintendent Cindy Marten, SD Unified Police Chief Mike Marquez, City of San Diego Police Chief Shelly Zimmerman and board members from SD Unified schools will be serving the lunch, according to a statement.
The Summer Fun Café is provided by the Seamless Summer Feeding Option, funded by the United States Department of Agriculture, and requires no paperwork to participate, according to a statement.
Meals will be served to children up to age 18, from June 19 to Aug. 18 at various locations, including schools, recreation centers, libraries and military community sites.
The Summer Fun Café will also host special barbecue events throughout summer 2017 where parents and guardians can eat at for no cost, funded provided by Mission Federal Credit Union, San Diego Honda Dealers and General Mills.

I’m with you. It disgusted me to see kids come to schools, get their free breakfast, lunch, and healthy snack and not have to use some of the family Food Stamps to pay for the food.
Gee. I remember a time when schools only taught and educated children.
But they failed at that many years ago, so now they feed and entertain them.
EBT cards, SNAP, food banks, free school breakfasts, free school lunches, free school dinners, free school summer lunches, church meals, various charities meals, free grocery store bags, police and other emergency organizational food drives, etc. Nope, obviously still not enough for the grifters.

So. How do they know these meals are for children in need if no paperwork is required?
I hope they don’t start any fires with that BBQ. The state had to cut back on police and firefighters because they are out of money.
The hotel took a dollar five a day out of my paycheck for my meals and I could eat three times a day if I wanted to. Quite the deal!
Yet at any given time you can read sob stories about the millions of poor, hungry, improverished children here in the US who are malnourished and underfed.
As a former teacher, you could feed 100’s with the amount of food THROWN away daily in public shool cafeterias.
All money is fungible. Federal funds equal to the money spent by Sand Diego should be withheld. The federal government can not subsidize municipal profligacy.
So. How do they know these meals are for children in need if no paperwork is required?
No they don’t entertain the kids. For that reason the kids are restless. Especially unacceptable is that boys act like boys in school.
So we drug them. We communicate to them that drugs are the solution to all problems. They never learn self-discipline. They never learn self-control. They can’t learn that when they are on Adderall or Ritalin or whatever the drug of the month is.
Well, I’d rather see the schools providing FOOD for the chillren rather than giving MONEY to the parents to supposedly buy food with. Cut the EBT or food stamps or whatever accordingly. If the urchins are getting 2 free meals a day at school five days a week, that’s roughly 40 meals out of 90 that the parents won’t have to provide. So reduce their cash benefits by 4/9ths for every kid in school. Plus, once the kids learn the only way they get food is to show up at school, maybe they’ll learn something.
Just keep the gummint out of the menu so at least what they’re being fed is edible not Moochable.
