Conversation with a Disarmed Health Pro at Yuma Regional Medical Center
Gun Watch ^ | 18 June, 2017 | Dean Weingarten

I struck up a conversation with a health care professional. The subject turned to active shooters and the vulnerability of Yuma Regional Medical Center (YMRC).

We were in the Yuma Regional Medical Center outpatient clinic. I was getting prepped for my daily dose of high powered intravenous antibiotic. The health care professional did a good job, and I complemented her. She said she had a lot of practice.  I agreed that performance on nearly everything improves with practice, but some people are just naturals at some tasks.

I gave the example of a young man I took dove hunting. With very little practice, he was hitting as well as I was after 50 years of wing shooting.  He is a natural.

The health care professional replied.  She had been to the range recently, and she could make head shots with her .380 Smith and Wesson.  Then she complained about the restrictive anti-self defense policy of YRMC. She wished that she could have her pistol with her at work, but she was forbidden to do so by corporate policy. She said:

"If there was an active shooter here, we would be sitting ducks. Maybe we could run and hide, but we have patients that cannot."

"If I had my pistol, they would not get by me."
We talked a little more about her pistol, magazine capacity, weight, and triggers.

The conversation was unsolicited.  I do not wish to get this dedicated professional into trouble.  Retaliation is not unknown in such situations, even for such innocuous things as casual conversation about corporate policy. Maybe more so for a non-profit.

My observation is that many health care professionals are competent with firearms. It follows from their enhanced desire to help people. They do not want the patients in their care to be undefended.

If you are wondering what the high-powered antibiotics are all about, it is pneumonia. It is likely the reason my writing production has been down for 10 months.

One bit of good news: My doctor says the pneumonia was masked by my overall excellent aerobic capacity.  She said if I weren't so healthy, I would have been in the hospital months ago.

It should be cleared up before I head off to Australia.  I will be writing about Australian gun culture while I am there.

If I had been Dean I wouldn’t have even mentioned the town. Our enemies aren’t necessarily stupid, but they are evil and they are relentless when it comes to imposing their POV.

Maybe the name of the med center he -actually- goes to is different, and the medic treating him was -not- a woman.

Get well soon Dean! Glad you addressed what it was you were getting treatment for, had me wondering.

Always look forward to reading your articles. Thanks for the contribution you are making to the cause of liberty.

I did think of that and hope it’s the case (for her sake). Dean is a great reporter though, and not given to subterfuge that might affect his credibility.

Australia has a gun culture?

They have a vibrant gun culture, outside the cites.

Australia is big place, as big as the lower 48 states. It has population about the same as California.

But 80% of the people there live in the cities.

Out in the rural areas, they own and use guns all the time.

Australia has insane levels of gun regulation. A toy gun made of plastic, that looks like a real gun is treated the same as a real gun. A BB gun is treated the same as a .375 magnum.

But they follow their own laws, so if you jump through enough hoops, you can own guns.

My wife was the controller of a small country hospital for several years and back in the early 00’s the head nurse decided the hospital needed to jump on the gun ban bandwagon and brought up placing No Firearms signs around the hospital and my wife said this is a CCW state you are inevitably going to run into a patient in the ER or hospital with a weapon and them be legal, what are you going to do then?

Oh will just have security come get the gun and lock it up. One of the other administrative people in the meeting said they wouldn’t get mine, not without me receiving a receipt with my name on it and the hospital taking full responsibility for the gun at that point. If it get stolen or used for a crime while in the hospitals possession YOU are going to pay me and take full responsibility.

Then the head nurse said well police officers will have to disarm when they come to the hospital as well. My wife said my brother is a police officer and he is going laugh in your face when you tell him he can’t carry while in the hospital and then asked have you ran this by the town PD and sheriff’s department? No. Another person in the meeting said I work with EMS and LEO’s daily, they will NOT follow this rule.

Then my wife pointed out you have people coming and going all day long who are legally armed with permits and you have had no problems, they have been trained and had background checks, they are not the ones you have to worry about. The other administrators shot the head nurses blissninny behavior down and said no to gun control. After that one of the department heads would see my wife in the hallway and start singing “Janies got a gun...”

A new management company took over and moved their people in and my wife lost her job a few years later and within 6 months the little ghost buster no gun signs were everywhere. I went to my doctor a shooter afterwards in the professional building and said, well I saw you are now an official kill zone. Don’t you feel safe with those little signs everywhere? He just laughed and said I feel really safe in my office once I get to my desk and gave me a wink. He totally ignores the ban.
