When I was in the national guard infantry in the 80s we used m16 assault rifles. The ar15 is like a civilian varint of the m16 ehich is why I call it sn assault rifle. It is a techincal term decades older than the PC term assault weapon which was codified around 2003 in the so called assault eeapons ban. Assault rifle is not a PC term. It predates this newspeak crap.

I don't know much about guns, and wondered where 'assault' came from:

The AR in “AR-15” rifle stands for ArmaLite rifle, after the company that developed it in the 1950s. “AR” does NOT stand for “assault rifle” or “automatic rifle.”
