I’m also reading ‘American Caesar’, a novel about MacArthur. More similarities as well as flaws. In his MAGA campaign I’m sure Trump has every intention of joining this group. It will take all of his 8 years and he won’t be around long enough afterwards to bask in his glory or rest on his laurels-unlike Obama and BJ. They left the WH at a relatively young age and any thought of greatness is missing. At least Carter did humble carpentry work.
Churchill was rejected after the war was done. Didn’t need him anymore. He musta been hated every step of the way but reluctantly accepted. On a smaller level it’s the same with Bush 41 after Kuwait. The people will never recognize the skill with witch he conducted the war and the diplomacy leading up to it. Same with managing Soviet nukes after the Berlin wall fell. They didn’t fall into the wrong hands. Remember the protests that came with Pershing missiles under Reagan? Turned out he did the right thing. A wartime leader may just be unnecessary in peacetime. The moral: No good deed goes unpunished.
A novel?
Was nonfiction, I believe. I could be wrong.
