Wasn’t this the accepted timing in the past—security first (e.g., the wall, eVerify, etc.), then and only then discuss DACA (which congress has already previously rejected).

Nope. He has to sign a bill to make it law. He doesn;t have to sign a DACA bill.
If you let in someone on a merit-based immigration system, they are not going to want to leave their underage children or aging parent behind because these people are their dependents. People who are dependents at the time of their immigration should have no standing to bring in anyone. The DACA recipients should not be able to sponsor anyone.
It could be, especially if we get DACA and nothing in return.
But his comments yesterday reflect what he was saying up through just a few months before he started running for president.

It's all just words. I feel when I watch Trump in this meeting I'm watching him do something I cannot possibly understand. I can't hope to keep up. And neither can anyone else in that room(which is saying a lot when you really think about it.)
Maybe I'm wrong. But I'm willing to wait and see. Honestly, how successful would Trump be if he did and said things the way people seem to think he should? Are any of the people criticising him billionaires? Could they survive in Trump's shoes for 5 seconds if given the chance?

trump cannot save Maerifca if the democrat party gets its way on immigartion, they will use it to bring in more democrat voters and America will become a larger version of Mexifornia.
