Last week the nation watched in horror as the body count of Broward school children and staff doubled by the minute.
The very next day the FBI admitted they had failed to act on a vital lead that explicitly detailed the mass murderer's intentions to kill people at his school. Immediately, Florida Gov. Rick Scott called for FBI Director Christopher Wray to resign in the wake of the Parkland school shooting.
While the FBI apologized and issued a standard vague statement, Gov. Scott said Wray must resign, saying acknowledging a mistake isnt going to cut it.. "An apology will never bring these 17 Floridians back to life or comfort the families who are in pain. The families will spend a lifetime wondering how this could happen, and an apology will never give them the answers they desperately need, Scott said in a statement.
Days later, many of the facts have emerged and it's time to explain to these families why their loved ones are dead or wounded. It's time to tell how the shooting actually did happen and why it was allowed to occur.
On that fateful day, February 14, the Broward Sheriff's Office (BSO) response was not to pursue the shooter since the officers were not moving to protect innocents at the Parkland HS. In fact, Cruz chose the time which he preferred to quit shooting since he was under no pressure from anyone to stop. He could have killed a few dozen more students during the time of non-response from the sheriff's officers. He decided to quit shooting and blend in to escape his rampage.
But getting back to the prevention of school fatalities and mass murder, The BSO is guilty of the same original error as the FBI - failure to report and investigate a gravely serious life-threatening tip. Except the sheriff's mistakes were much more grievous than the one time (admitted) error made by the FBI.
Shouldn't Gov. Scott be publicly calling for Broward Sheriff Israel's resignation?... Especially since he has the legal power to fire his Floridian subordinate law enforcement officer? Why didn't Sheriff Israel confess and apologize for his departmental errors with mishandling a lethal lead, as the FBI immediately had in the wake of the shooting? That would have been the honest and open thing to have done.
Unlike the FBI, the BSO is right in the heart of Broward County and was in a uniquely perfect position to intervene on more than several occasions. They received the same desperate calls containing the same ominous deadly information at the local sheriff's office three months prior to the shooting as well as in January of 2017. They failed to process all the explicit leads 'served on a silver platter' to them from concerned students, teachers, parents, neighbors, family members and friends who knew Cruz. One tip, phoned in on November 1, 2017 actually came from thousands of miles away -from Massachusetts, the woman was so concerned the Cruz was destined to be a killer, she wanted his gun collection removed by the BSO.
More importantly, the Broward school district housed the sheriff's School Resource Deputy in position at the high school to ensure school safety. The Broward Sheriff's Office had multiple occasions to intercede and stop Cruz. They failed for years to contain Nikolas Cruz as well as other dangerous juveniles that haunt the Broward schools as the result of a 'Sanctuary for juvenile criminal behavior' policy installed throughout the district in 2013.
Scott Israel, as head of the BSO, should be called upon to resign by Florida's governor in the wake of the Parkland mass shooting. It's justified to make that call and announce to the families why the system failed. Just as the FBI admitted their error in the transfer of information, Sheriff Israel's multiple errors are too numerous to count and a gross form of negligence. He needs to man-up and admit his failure to the Parkland families, they deserve to know the truth.
The FBI’s fault, the Sheriff’s fault, the security guard...
All these failures and dereliction of duty are apt to happen again and again regardless of ‘new laws’.
Just recognize the people’s right to carry as per the Constitution, and forget about it. The rest will take care of itself.
As opposed to the Obama/Hillary/DOJ FBI, the damage done by Sheriff Israel’s poor judgement doesn’t threaten our republic.
Exactly. Rick Scott is handling this well so far. He’s allowing the democrats and their controlled kiddie-crats to make fools of themselves on national TV.. Why would he want to take them out of the spotlight and turn it on himself? Firing Israel would be premature right now for a lot of reasons.
Yes, in the long run he does threaten the republic.
His coddling of criminals within the school system brings the educational system down further. Criminals and psychos need to be housed away from ‘our kids.’
And I don’t have any kiddos in the system.
An update: The sheriff’s office is also being scrutinized for apparently mishandling some of the —>18 tipster calls<— related to the suspected shooter. Israel said a deputy who responded to a Nov. 30 call was being investigated for not filing a report.
So we’ve gone from the rat-faced being unaware of any calls to BSO...... to ONE....then...Two... and now it’s 18 crime tips on psycho!
I've seen no info on how many rounds he brought with him.
6 minutes start to finish, including suiting/loading up, getting to the 3rd floor and targeting whoever among different rooms.
Important New Information:
* Moreover, it is reported that the administrators at Marjory Stoneman Douglas recommended in January 2017 that the Broward County School Board conduct a threat assessment on the killer. It is undetermined at this time what, if anything was done.
^^^^^This goes to the Culpability & Liability of the Broward County School Board^^^^^
Even more distressing is the report that the police were called to this individuals home dozens of times over the last years. Yet, this information was never matched with the other warning signs from the school and the FBI to address the growing threat. It is not enough to only question if the appropriate action had been taken last year, could the horror we now face have been prevented we must demand better, and hold those accountable for these failures, so that it does not happen again.
Broward sheriff, ‘dirty trickster’ forge unlikely tie
August 16, 2014
(Roger) Stone helped get Broward Sheriff Israel elected. And now, Stone has the sheriff’s ear.
When Israel took the sheriff’s helm in early 2013, in the first five months he added to BSO’s payroll Stone’s book-writing partner, Stone’s book publicist and Stone’s long-time executive assistant. He had Stone’s stepson transferred to detective, though it was early in his career, with just two years at the Sheriff’s Office.
Stone’s connections to BSO reach higher. His longtime friend Ron Gunzburger, who connected him with Sheriff Israel in the first place, is the agency’s general counsel.
Rick Scott isn’t giving Sheriff Israel a pass...
100% politics. Scott doesn’t want to anger the NY/NJ Jewish transplants who stupidly re-elected the Sheriff despite his obvious corruption.
Seems like Scott is risking his own career to support Israel - wonder if Israel is an “information collector”....
I doubt Israel has dirt on Scott. Rick Scott preceded Israel into politics. Rick is from the west coast- Naples -and was the past pres. of HCA before getting into politics. He’s a class act; Israel is a complete tool.
He’s seeking celebrity status by condemning the NRA and gun owners after his deputies failed to take action. And after his deputies failed to heed the warnings of a laundry list of people, include the shooter himself, that promised the world he was going to kill people at his school. And that’s the very same school Israel’s own 3 sons attended.
The hashtag #ResignSheriffIsrael was trending in fourth place on Twitter last Friday. It’s the likely response to the CNN article contended that the Coral Springs PD reported as many as 4 BSO deputies not entering MSD high school to apprehend the shooter.
Wonder if the publicity hounddog sheriff told them to hold off until he was on the scene. Visualize Scott Israel puffed up in a flap-jacket and helmet looking mighty manly, all ready to lead the charge staring into the lens of the camera.
