President of Guatemala Announces His Country’s Embassy Will Move to Jerusalem in May

Yesterday, in Washington DC (United States), the President of Guatemala Jimmy Morales met with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The two met to discuss deepening bilateral ties and cooperation. The Israeli Prime Minister thanked the Guatemalan President for recognizing Jerusalem as Israel’s capital. In response to Netanyahu’s, Morales replied, “It is an honor and it is the right thing to do.”

The Guatemalan President’s response was reminiscent of the remark made by US President Donald Trump during his historic announcement regarding Jerusalem as the capital of Israel. Regarding his announcement to recognize Jerusalem and to move the US embassy there, Trump said, “This is nothing more or less than a recognition of reality. It is also the right thing to do. It’s something that has to be done.”

In a post-meeting Twitter post yesterday, the Guatemalan President had the following remark, “Today I held a pleasant meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin, who thanked the decision to move the Embassy of Guatemala to the city of Jerusalem. The alliance between the peoples of Israel and Guatemala is stronger than ever. Blessings.”

Netanyahu also took to Twitter to publicly thank the Morales for his support for Israel. (See the Twitter Post in the original article.)

Later that evening, Morales spoke at the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) Policy Conference, also in Washington DC, to a crowd of more than 18,000 Israel supporters. He told the conference attendees that he will move his country’s embassy to Jerusalem in May, and that the relocation will take place two days after the United States moves its embassy to the holy city, to coincide with the 70th anniversary of Israel’s founding. The President’s announcement comes just over a week after the US Department of State announced plans to move the United States embassy to Jerusalem in May of this year.

“In May of this year, we will celebrate Israel’s 70th anniversary, and under my instructions, two days after the US will move its embassy, Guatemala will return and permanently move its embassy to Jerusalem,” President Jimmy Morales told the crowd, according to The Times of Israel coverage of the event.

Guatemala has a close relationship with Israel. You see Israeli flags and "Star of David's" on churches other institutions there all over the country. The National Police force and Military in Guatemala carry Israeli Arms weapons such as the Tavor, Galil and a Jericho on their hips. It is my understanding that Israel is involved with the training of their Police and Military as well.
Respect for Israel is a part of Guatemalan culture from what I have observed.
