David Brooks: Trump Supporters Are "Tuned Out"; His "Chaos" "Doesn't Rise To The Level (tr)

PBS NEWSHOUR: Syndicated columnist Mark Shields and New York Times columnist David Brooks join Judy Woodruff to discuss the week’s news, including Secretary of State Rex Tillerson’s firing amid a wave of rumors about a wider Cabinet shakeup, Pennsylvania’s stunning election upset and Sen. Jeff Flake’s comments about 2020.

Brooks, who identifies as a conservative, lamented that Trump is "anti-system" and won't work through what he said is the "vast apparatus" in the White House.

"Trump is getting Trumpier, and the administration is getting Trumpier," Brooks said. ....

(snip)

The scribe said he has spent much time with Trump supporters in the last week and tried to rationalize why Trump "still" has a 90% approval rating among Republicans. Brooks determined that these people "have tuned in out" in regards to hirings and firings. He found that they support the administration and "like the big things about it" such as the tax bill.

Unable to process how one could support Trump, Brooks said he consistently asks "them" a line of "what about" questions.

"They have tuned it out," he said of the Trump supporter. "They support the administration. They like the big things about it, the tax bill, the deregulation, that kind of thing. And I always ask them, what about this, what about this, the things we frankly talk about a lot every week."

"It just sort of drifts by them unnoticed," Brooks observed. "And so if you want to know why he’s still got 90 percent approval roughly among Republicans, I think that’s the answer. A lot of things that would cause most people to shake their heads.

He said what Trump does just doesn't "rise to the level of consciousness" of a Trump supporter.

One thing Brooks sort of got it right is this -

"Trump is getting Trumpier, and the administration is getting Trumpier," Brooks said. "in the beginning, he was sort of on the learning curve of the presidency, but he’s got it mastered, and so he doesn’t need all these people who are telling him no all the time."

In the beginning president Trump had to rely on some of those DC Insiders who knew the ropes, and these people DID give bad advices thinking they are the true power running the show.

Back at Belmont Club during the election, we've discussed that candidate Trump was a human wrecking ball, elected to smash through existing bureaucracies and un-elected bureaucrats. Brooks doesn't know sh!t about Trump supporters, but Trump supporters know why and what they elected him to do.

Apparently the self-proclaimed "conservative" Brooks is still mesmerized by 'forms and/or styles' like the creased pants and soaring flowery speeches.

Again, this showed (to some degree) the limit of such New York-DC talking circus, no matter how much they screeched 24/7.

Yup and he’s once again wrong here. We’re not tuning out what Trump does, we’re tuning out what people like Brooks say about what Trump does.

Au contraire. We’re cheering the hirings and firings. To us, they are indications that President Trump is making headway in the goal to drain the swamp and replace the creatures with true patriots.

Perhaps Brooks should try spending some time with Trump supporters and trying to understand what we see going on in the country, our frustration with the corrupt DC establishment, and our ideas for what we want done to fix the swamp. If he understood that, he wouldn’t be asking why Trump is still at 90% support. Instead, he’d be wondering why the support is so low.

As usual, they don’t understand us. The Left sees government as the center of all life. It gives and takes, produces, and destroys. So, they anxiously watch everything.

We see government as a fence to keep bad things away. If we are satisfied that it does that, then WE go back to our function—which is to give and take, produce and destroy. Trump is doing the work we sent him to the White House to do, so we can relax and watch important things.

Brooks, who identifies as a conservative, lamented that Trump is "anti-system" and won't work through what he said is the "vast apparatus" in the White House.

So Brooks has been drinking the Kool Aide and thinking that political orientation is an arbitrary act of will, like deciding which washroom you are going to use. Brooks is as much a conservative as Caitlin is a .... well, I don't want to offend Brooks's PC views.

More to the point, Trump is anti-system. That was the point of electing him, and why should he use the apparatus that got us into the mess - which Brooks spends no time lamenting - that we are in.

That is because, apparently, Brooks, a NY and NYSlimes "Conservative" thinks there is nothing wrong with making a packet on daddy Biden's name while selling a key defense capability out to the Chinese. Or sending a demarche when Kim sets of a nuke and threatens the left coast.

And that vast white house apparatus [David, David - that vast apparatus isn't actually in the WH, the old and new executive office buildings] has been stabbing Trump - and the country - in the back at every turn, except that Kelly seems to have shut down all of that nonsense.

David, what really gauls me is not your views - who cares what you say - but the fraud, that you and others pass this off as the view of "reasonable" conservatives. I think that most reasonable of all conservatives and your first employer, WFB, should rise from the grave and punch you in the nose like he threatened to do to Noam Chomsky.

The media is the boy who cried wolf.

So there are many of us who tuned out. Tuned out of listening to anything they have to say.

Patriots don't care about brooke's "what abouts" because he, and his college of lying liars in the FAKE NEWS media are finely, widely recognized as being such.

So, yes, we tune out. Die media. Die.

Brooks is the character who thought the crease in Obama’s trousers was worth space in one of his columns. That’s the sort of personal navel gazing and obsession with trivialities that seem to guide his assessment of Trump supporters, also.

It’s much simpler than that, David. Trump supporters believe that his is right about most all the critical issues, and they believe that the Dims and GOPe are wrong about most all the critical issues.

So, maybe Brooks can figure out where to shove his list of “what about” questions, but I wouldn’t bet on it.

He should have listed as examples some of the “what-abouts” , “the things [Brooks and his pals] frankly talk about a lot every week.” I’ll wager they are all the things that the establishment swamp think should be on the agenda, after all they are in charge despite the election.

“It just sort of drifts by them unnoticed.”

When I read that, I immediately thought he was describing the left, and the entrenched status quo in DC. Example? Consider their position on illegal immigration, non-enforcement of immigration laws, or chain migration, or the immigration lottery. Talk about not rising “to the level of consciousness.”

How's this for form and style? This is David Brooks, 57, and his new wife and former research assistant Anne Snyder, 33. Brooks and his ex got married in 1986 and called it quits after 27 years of marriage.

“Perhaps Brooks should try spending some time with Trump supporters...”

They could spend 24/7 x 365 days x 8 years with Trump supporters and he still would not get it.
