From Wiki:

"The official language is English.[2] Major languages include Chichewa, a language spoken by over 57% of the population, Chinyanja (12.8%), Chiyao (10.1%), and Chitumbuka (9.5%).[35] Other native languages are Malawian Lomwe, spoken by around 250,000 in the southeast of the country; Kokola, spoken by around 200,000 people also in the southeast; Lambya, spoken by around 45,000 in the northwestern tip; Ndali, spoken by around 70,000; Nyakyusa-Ngonde, spoken by around 300,000 in northern Malawi; Malawian Sena, spoken by around 270,000 in southern Malawi; and Tongaare

Then they are on a reasonable path...

What can justify one textbook costing $200? Last semester, he had an engineering textbook that cost $225. They barely used it. A history book costs about $100. Higher education is a racket.

Books aren't free- buy $200? It's the 4th Edition. Last year was the 3rd Edition. The 3rd Edition is obsolete. What changes have been in the field of Calculus in the past year?

I once had a cab driver in the UK...he was from Ghana...(This was during the primaries)...and he owned that book ‘Art of the Deal’ and when he found out I was American he said “I hope Trump becomes your president.”

It is exactly that, a racket. They revise the books, changing a few words, then call it updated, re-print, and charge. Also many books required for college courses just happen to have the professor as the author or contributing author.

Used to work with a guy who had a big college books store/racket in Lubbock, TX. He unashamedly told use how they make so much money (but we were not his customers).

I don’t know about Malawi, but Africans from countries like Cameroon are usually trilingual and speak: French, English, and a native tongue.

And their French and English are the most beautifully accented and pronounced.

My neighbor, now retired, taught in an inner city school in Boston.

She said that they got a wonderful young man from Nigeria to teach there.

He also moved his wife and 2 small children here.

After 3 months of trying to teach out of control, foul mouthed, inner city kids he quit-——said he couldn’t take it anymore.

He took his family back to Nigeria.

I can only imagine the crushing disappointment felt by those originally anxious to get their hands on the books— having heard “bucks”— and now having no interest. Makes me smile!

When I was in college, many, many years ago, we had a used book store. We sold our books at semester’s end and bought used ones the next semester.

Lousy headline.

She happened to be there when the books were delivered.

She didn’t supply them as inferred by the headline.

Hey I used to teach in high school and then a middle school and there were awful kids in those classes. I would never go back. I can understand why he quit. There is respect for teachers and a real desire to get ahead in their schools. We here have lost control of schools for the most part.
