Radically Transforming the Nation: Our Politicized Schools of Education
James G. Martin Center for Academic Renewal ^ | February 20, 2019 | Jay Schalin

If somebody wanted to fundamentally transform a society to its roots, where would he or she start?

The most logical starting point would be education. And if there were one part of the educational system that would produce this transformation most broadly, effectively, and efficiently, it would most likely be at our schools of education that train teachers for the K-12 classroom. That’s where ideas from the rest of academia are inserted into the curriculum for elementary and high school students, and where politically unsophisticated young people are turned into classroom teachers. Control the schools of education, and the education system will eventually be yours to forward your political agenda.

Remarkably, that is just what has happened in this country. Over 100 years ago, when our education schools were just starting up or growing from two-year normal schools to university status, Progressive educators set out to transform the nation into one that was based on social science theories, collectivism, and central planning.

How successful were they? Several years ago, I started an investigation into how politicized education schools have become. Today, the Martin Center is releasing the results of that investigation in a new report, titled “The Politicization of University Schools of Education.”

The report’s main conclusion? That schools of education may very well be radicalized beyond anything imagined by the early Progressives.

The way I came to that conclusion was through two methods. One was an empirical examination of the syllabi of three major education schools, the Universities of Wisconsin, Michigan, and North Carolina. I looked at 290 total syllabi from the three education schools and tabulated the most frequently assigned authors. Rather than basing popularity on the number of times an author’s works were assigned, I used the number of classes in which their works were assigned

And it works. Most of my nieces and nephews are politicized idiots who think they are the smartest, most intelligent people on the planet.

Nearly every teacher in this nation was trained by communists!

This is true for both private and government schools.

When will conservatives WAKE UP to this serious threat?

When my daughter was a Junior in HS, she came home one night and just ripped the family about global warming, our carbon footprint, our wasteful food practices, our use of energy and on and on. I asked where she had gotten her information and she said that it was from her history teacher (?).

The next day was a Friday and she was running late as usual. She came to me said, “We gotta go, I have to go to school.” I told her that I had been thinking about what she had said the previous evening and told her that I was going to work from home that day in an effort to reduce our carbon footprint. She said, “But Dad, I have a Bio test today, we have to go.” I told her that saving the planet was more important than her Bio test. She was livid, and called some friends to see if she could get a ride. No luck. She stayed home that Friday.

I suggested she spend the weekend doing some research on global warming and energy use and see if what her teacher seemed right. She did and spent two days writing a paper for her history teacher that debunked human caused global warming. It was not an assignment but she gave it to the teacher anyway. It came back with a note at the top that said “I'll have to think about this.”

I seem to remember that she was able to take her Bio test on Monday, but the perspective and discernment she gained was more valuable than anything.

When my daughter was in elementary school, they were teaching the dangers of being “touched the wrong way.” One night after her bath, I was drying her with a towel and she told me “I’m going to tell my teacher you touched my skin.”

She had no idea that being swaddled by a towel was not what the teacher meant. I had to explain the difference.

The key is breaking the unionized educrat monopoly!

State legislatures must pass right to work laws & end the false requirement that a K-12 education degree is required to teach. There is no reason retired (or those who wish to change careers!) engineers & scientists should be required to take a load of education classes before then can teach science & math in a K-12 system. A probationary teaching year should be all that’s needed.

Paging Betsy DeVois. Given that so many parents and teachers and unions have a stake, I hope the day after Trump wins re-election he dismantles the public school system and sets up incentives for competition.

When I was a young, engineering student at the University of Wisconsin, back in 1966, I was required to get career counseling by grad students of the Sociology Department. There were two “counselors” at each folding table, so there was no privacy.

My “counselor” looked at my papers and said, “You are in engineering. You know what you want to do. This is a mere formality!”

The other “counselor” had a very pretty girl sitting across from him (Lucky Bastard!). He was looking at her records and said to her, “You math and English scores indicate no aptitude for anything. You may as well go into education!”

I looked at my “counselor” and he looked at me, and we both rolled our eyes!

“Those who can...Do! Those who can’t...Teach! Those who can do neither...Administer!”

This was an explicit part of the plan of the Communists in the USA since the 1930’s.

As I’ve stated many times on FR, my mother was a typist with the FBI in WWII and typed this stuff back then.

Then in the 60’s she got to watch it being implemented before her very eyes. God bless her, I grew up knowing this from my HS days........

A great deal of the Marxist/atheist plans for our nation are already in place and irreversible. Marxists are in total control of our educational system and the media.

Once AOC, Sanders, Beto, Kamala, Cory, et all get in office AFTER TRUMP, the path to become Venezuela is in high gear........

And there has not been ONE CONSERVATIVE (including Rush, Prager, etc.) to EVER OFFER A SOLUTION FOR TAKING BACK THE MARXIST BRAINWASHING SYSTEM OF OUR GOVERNMENT SCHOOLS!

That’s why it is OVER. AND IRREVERSIBLE.

Well to be honest, yes I agree education needs to be one of the first reformations, but until there is political system that is okay with all that is happening education want help. Well this is my point of view.

ANOTHER REASON TO HOMESCHOOL

This ping list is for the other articles of interest to homeschoolers about education and public school. This can occasionally be a fairly high volume list. Articles pinged to the Another Reason to Homeschool List will be given the keyword of ARTH. (If I remember. If I forget, please feel free to add it yourself)

The main Homeschool Ping List handles the homeschool-specific articles. I hold both the Homeschool Ping List and the Another Reason to Homeschool Ping list. Please freepmail me to let me know if you would like to be added to or removed from either list, or both.

Actually it’s easy to say hard to do but not impossible:

1. Deunionization of the teaching establishment! This will require state right to work legislation. Even then vigilance to make sure what’s passed had teeth. It will end much of the strident union militancy you’re seeing now from teachers,

2. End the education hours or degree requirement! Replace with a one year probationary teaching period. The Colleges of Education are hotbeds of nonsensical education theories, sedition & stupidity! End the requirement these colleges will die on the vine.

Great post. I plan to use your technique should any of my kids come home spouting politicized narratives.

I looked up the climate change data and reports when writing a master’s thesis and I found it to be utterly flawed. In short, human caused climate change is a statistical lie by those who want to use government to take away wealth from others.

Nice ideas, but neither deals with the root cause nor is either a solution.

And they are so close to impossible that they are not feasible.....

IMHO, of course........
