Was never a big fan of open carry for this reason. Also, no tactical advantage.

Understand that open carry is more of a political statement than a defensive posture.

Only when fishing at the higher up rivers.

One of the video responders quoted "Open carry in the woods, concealed carry in the hoods".

Probably a good rule of thumb...

When surrounded by like minded people at a pro-2A rally, yeah.

Personally, I still wouldn't unless I had a quality retention holster. Even then I'd think twice.

I carry open daily, I carry in a retention holster. I’m also very aware of my surroundings. Touch my pistol and there’s a good chance you will die! I’m a Vietnam Vet and a Veteran of law enforcement. I’m an old man with little patience for idiot’s. The choice is your’s!

Was never a big fan of open carry for this reason.

The guy in this video may as well left his pistol laying on the trunk lid of his car. Too dumb to carry.

I concealed carry almost 99+% of the time and only open carry if I'm in the woods or if I want to make a statement.

When I open carry, I'm also carrying one they don't see.

I've rarely seen the tactical advantage of open carrying. When I first started going to Tea Party Rallies, I open carried, but that was more in line with my friends.

Usually a group of 5-8 would agree to open carry and when we did we always stayed in groups of at least 3 so we could watch the crowd and each others back.

I can't imagine a worse feeling than being blindsided, overpowered, and taken down with your own weapon. AAARRRRGGGHHHHH.

Open carry is for show offs who (“look at me!”), most likely, have not had sufficient firearms training.

The tactical avantage is nothing to sweep out of the way to get to the gun or get hung up on while clearing the holster.

Exactly, open carry is bling...look at me I have a gun. It is stupid, unnecessaty and childish.

I fully believe that open carry is a right but I don’t do it. I think it just makes you a target.

Open carry when you jolly well please and do not worry what anyone else thinks about it. Those assigning motives here are like the leftists who say that you are armed because you are filled with self-doubt about your own “manhood” shall we say.

Really appreciate John Correia and I subscribe to his channel. Every situation has multiple lessons though, and it is a mistake to treat this situation as if the only lesson were to never open carry without a retention holster.

Transition spaces. Our victim is completely focused on his car. It is hard, but when you are in transition spaces, that is when you are most vulnerable, and you must pay attention.

Counter ambush. Normally when a man has the drop on you, you submit until there is a chance to launch a counter ambush. However, this man has not merely stolen money or property, but he has taken my gun! I will not allow this, perhaps at the cost of my life, yes, but absolutely at the cost of his. I am NOT afraid to die. I am NOT afraid to go to jail. I believe that I am likely to survive the wound that he inflicts on me as I attack and kill him.

Ankle carry. What an ideal situation from which to draw a backup! As you turn and rise your point shooting skills come into play. After you empty your backup gun in him, will you be able to reload?

Anyway, how often does this actually happen? Anyone know? Do we make a blanket condemnation against open carry because of this video? How do we even know he was open carrying? What if he just took off his jacket or covering garment to work on his car? Are you scared for anyone to ever see your pistol? You ever get out of your car and put on your jacket? Do you disarm every time you work on your car?

THIRD CHOICE

Open carry a fake pistol,

While conceal carry real pistol.

Makes statement, plus element on surprise.

When they passed open carry here in TX it took the hassle out of carrying concealed - concealed meant CONCEALED. No printing, accidental slips, nothing. The guns-are-icky crowd took great satisfaction in spotting concealed carriers and making complaints in the hope of getting permits pulled. Then they went to trying to SWAT open carriers (there's a man with a gun in a holster and he's acting weird!), probably in the hope that cops would swoop in with guns a-blazing (yes, they're that demented). That failed to get traction, at least in these parts. The cops had anticipated those sort of stunts, and after a few of the complainants got a verbal reaming out those sort of calls dropped off also.

It was a big deal to get shall-issue in Michigan and our local left wing garbage newspaper The Free Press tried to FOIA all the names of concealed carriers to publicly expose them. Didn't work.

I open carry with an OWB retention holster when hiking in case I slide down the hill. Even then I usually have a cover garment over it unless I am changing shirts at the rest point.

I open carry for work and when Im not working. I carry to win, not brag.

Gun fights are fast. Usually, first shot wins. While “Mr Conceal” is still messing with his shirt, Im already on my follow up shot.

Rule 1: Smooth is fast. And there is nothing smooth about lifting your shirt and digging around your gut to draw out a gun I already saw when you came in (it’s not just “printing” a person needs to consider).

And in 20 years, no one has tried to “ambush” me... or other nonsense.

Well I'm certainly impressed. So what kind of a retention holster is it, passive or active?

Open carry or concealed carry. The real issue is situational awareness no matter how you carry or where you are. I consider everybody within 20 feet of me a potential threat.
