Natural Health

Many FReepers have knowledge to share about improving and maintaining health and would like to share it and learn from others; and others may not know much yet but want to learn. Some of us don't have much money for good insurance or doctors, some want to try other methods besides prescription meds, and some have experience in treating and solving health problems.

More and more "regular" doctors have accepted treatment methods such as the benefits of acupuncture, massage for many conditions, better diet, use of herbs and so on. There are limits, and often side effects, to some standard medical efforts.

My field is Ayurvedic herbalism and related measures, and have a lot of information I can post when I have time. I have seen herbs and sometimes dietary changes help people (including myself) with issues such as rheumatoid arthritis, high BP, gallstones, kidneystones, repeated boils, UTIs, prostate problems, insomnia, allergies, urinary incontinence, and many more. I hope to learn a lot from others with their knowledge and experience.

There are many "old fashioned" home care methods that were in common use a few generations ago that actually work and are cheap, such as castor oil packs, fomentations using alternating hot and cold water, and the like, which are easy to do. I am sure there is a lot of knowledge here on Free Republic that can be shared.

I would like this thread to stay civil without distruption, so my request is that people who think natural health methods are bunkum, make your own thread.

I am planning on posting a lot of info on herbs that I am familiar with and use often. Many are Ayurvedic herbs, but thankfully very widely available now, as well as traditional western herbs. If anyone has any particular herbs they’d be interested in learning about, let me know. I will be getting information from my various herb books.

Thank you for this info. Vet gave us a cleaner plus a rx of drops. The cat is hiding out. Hoping he comes back. If we can get ahold of him, we’re going to put him on the patio for a week so we can treat him 2x a day.

This is so traumatic for him (and me). He’s such a sweet, loving boy. Now he runs away when he sees us :(

thank you for the info on the cat’s ear infection. If this rx doesn’t clear it, I’ll give that a try.

thanks for the info about the castor oil packs. I probably did not use enough oil. I see the doctor tomorrow and will go from there.

Let me know what happens. The castor oil has to be slathered. I’m not kidding when I say you need to have everything all set out, tape cut, etc because it is rather messy. But worth it.

I vowed after that middle of the night burn (when DH was 300 miles away working for a couple of weeks) that I would never be without lavender oil or clay, the rest of my life. We also did not have electricity or hot water at that time, that’s why I was carrying a huge pot of boiling water.

I read the entire thread looking for anyone discussing cayenne pepper. I found a good link some years ago and go to it often. Cayenne pepper is part of my “medicine chest”. I initially used it to treat hemorrhoids(occupational hazard) but since use it to treat upset stomach or sore throats. I just mix a half tsp in about 6oz of warm water and drink it. It works!

Here’s the link, lots of good info.

Researching health solutions via natural means is an interest of mine. It got me off the prescription drug merry-go-round.

btw, I purchase organic cayenne pepper in a 1 lb jar from Amazon.

Glad you’re off the merry-go-round. I’m afraid to get on it, so I treat practically everything with other means.

Oh, my goodness. That is astounding. Vit B...I wonder if it would help with old age memory loss. I’m not as sharp as I used to be. I’m going to try it.

I agree that natural methods wouldn’t help big pharma.

My MD knows nothing about natural methods and looks at me like I’m crazy when I ask about them.

My health food store carries 5,000 mcg, that is what I take, just put under your tongue and allow to dissolve.

Some of the amounts are so low in mcg, I have to wonder if it is worth it.

Happy health!!!

I’m trying to go through the thread to find info on breathing help and so far not much, so I think it’s mostly in the 300-500 post range. I can’t look any more as I have to do stuff.

Trying scanning down between those two numbers and you should find quite a bit of info on helping with lung issues.

Sorry I can’t ping you to specific posts right now. I used up my FR time tonight!

Don’t rinse produce with soap. ????

Don’t use detergents or special soaps to wash produce, unless you’re using soap made of natural and organic materials. Dish soap has harmful compounds that can easily penetrate the skin of fruits and vegetables, which may end up doing more harm than pesticides.”

Anyone know what is organic soap ?

Regular detergents have some toxic ingredients which can soak into the cells of vegetables. I can’t even imagine washing produce with hand soap, which mostly have artificial fragrances and many other unpleasant ingredients in them.

I would recommend washing produce in water with some white vinegar in it. There are specific produce washing products but as I am dirt poor I never looked into them. I try to avoid the worst produce on that list, haven’t looked at it for a while.

Dirty Dozen (2019)
Below is EWG’s 2019 Dirty Dozen:

Strawberries
Spinach
Kale
Nectarines
Apples
Grapes
Peaches
Cherries
Pears
Tomatoes
Celery
Potatoes

I’ve read about the junk they grow potatoes with, plus they dunk them in something that kills them so they won’t sprout. I noticed years ago that potatoes stopped sprouting and tasted weird. I only eat org ones now. I read that many potato farmers (there are a lot in the next county over) grow the fields for sale, and for their family’s use, grow a small plot without the chemicals.

CA strawberries use some pretty bad stuff on strawberries; I lived in a strawberry growing area in SO Cal once and that stuff STUNK and even woke me up at night from the stink, when they applied it. No way I’ll eat those strawberries.

I’ve grown kale a lot and a certain kind of moth loves to lay its egss and then the kale is covered with tiny bugs. Diatomaceous earth gets rid of them easily, or prevents. How many commercial growers some DE? Ha, none. I wonder what they do use. There is some kind of (warning, not spelled right) Bacillus therogens-something or other that is harmless and prevents/gets rid of those bugs. I do wonder what commercial non-org growers use.

Here’s the okay ones:

Clean Fifteen (2019)
The EWG also published the “Clean Fifteen,” a list that includes 15 of fruits and vegetables “from conventional growers that generally had less residue in the group’s tests.”

Avocados
Sweet corn
Pineapples
Frozen sweet peas
Onions
Papayas
Eggplants
Asparagus
Kiwis
Cabbages
Cauliflower
Cantaloupes
Broccoli
Mushrooms
Honeydew melons
