Holy Holy Holy
Columbia Records ^ | 1861, 1962? | Reginal Heber as rendered by Mahalia Jackson and Percy Faith

Posted on 11/17/2019 5:18:44 PM PST by old-ager

Holy, Holy, Holy! Lord God Almighty! Early in the morning our song shall rise to Thee; Holy, Holy, Holy! Merciful and Mighty! God in Three Persons, blessed Trinity!

Holy, Holy, Holy! All the saints adore Thee, Casting down their golden crowns around the glassy sea; Cherubim and seraphim falling down before Thee, Which wert, and art, and evermore shalt be.

Holy, Holy, Holy! though the darkness hide Thee, Though the eye of sinful man, Thy glory may not see: Only Thou art holy, there is none beside Thee, Perfect in power in love, and purity.

Holy, holy, holy! Lord God Almighty! All thy works shall praise Thy name in earth, and sky, and sea; Holy, Holy, Holy! merciful and mighty, God in Three Persons, blessed Trinity!

That was the first hymn always sung in services in my childhood church. I’ve always loved it.

Thanks for posting. I love old school Christian music. Or,as I like to call it, Classic Rock of Ages.

Nice! It’s always been a favorite and it reminds me of the Methodist church I attended as a child.

Worthy is the Lord. 42 pages of classic hymns here , by the grace of God.

And I beheld, and I heard the voice of many angels round about the throne and the beasts and the elders: and the number of them was ten thousand times ten thousand, and thousands of thousands; Saying with a loud voice, Worthy is the Lamb that was slain to receive power, and riches, and wisdom, and strength, and honour, and glory, and blessing. And every creature which is in heaven, and on the earth, and under the earth, and such as are in the sea, and all that are in them, heard I saying, Blessing, and honour, and glory, and power, be unto him that sitteth upon the throne, and unto the Lamb for ever and ever. And the four beasts said, Amen. And the four and twenty elders fell down and worshipped him that liveth for ever and ever. (Revelation 5:11-14)

We sang it in our Catholic church too.

It’s a powerful melody, and beautiful poetry.

My church was Presbyterian.

Thanks for posting. I love old school Christian music.

I do, too. There are very few sacred songs written after 1939 that I like, and I have no use whatsoever for modern "praise" music.

“Holy, Holy, Holy” is still in the Methodist hymnal, but another work by John Dykes, “Eternal Father, Strong to Save” (1861) has been excluded from the latest edition of the hymnal despite its popularity.

There's a few here and there for me. I still enjoy some of Brownsville Revival's stuff. Ron Kenoly's Praise The Lord All Nations, some Promise Keepers stuff like Let It Rise,

I recently came across a song called Godol Adonai that's sung in Hebrew by a group of Jewish believers. Very uplifting.

I think that song is the official hymn of The Navy. Unless it’s been kicked to the curb by some sensitive snowflake or moose limb sailor.

Isn’t it wonderful to know that both Protestants and Catholics regard this hymn with such reverence? I’ve always loved it, and it made me feel like I was in the near presence of the Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord God Almighty!

Yes. It always thrilled me when the congregation belted it out.

“Eternal Father, Strong to Save” is either the official or the unofficial hymn of the US Navy.

Better to be correct than to think you are correct and pass along incorrect information.

That’s too bad. I grew up with the hymnal that had the burgundy cover, and then the one with the red cover from the late ‘60s. I liked both. I have been away from Methodism for 30 years and haven’t seen the more recent editions.

I spent my childhood summers going to Sunday morning services at the Chautauqua Institution. Every service then, and still, begins with Holy, Holy, Holy being sung by the thousands in attendance. I love the descant on the final verse.
