Libertarians and Their Favorite Forms of Authoritarianism

Ace recently had some fun at the expense of self-proclaimed libertarians whose politics are clearly far-left, even though they choose not to identify as Democrats.

In my younger days I kind of considered myself a libertarian, until I realized that the most vocal libertarians tended to be either pot-heads or anarchists. Nowadays I don’t even know what “libertarian” means any more, nor do I understand why people identify as libertarian when their agenda is actively anti-liberty. Libertarians actually seem to come in all sorts of flavors now – none of which have much to do with limited government. Here are some of the libertarian sub-groups and the poster child for each:

SOCIALIST LIBERTARIANS: Megan McArdle. McArdle’s form of principled libertarianism compels her to vote for a communist, Bernie Sanders, because she disapproves of Donald Trump using his 1st Amendment right to mock journalists.

Lost a lot of respect for Losertarians for not seeing an issue with monopoly companies like Facebook for practicing de facto censorship. There are what I call the Suicide Open Borders Libertarians. Losertarians are quite happy with Big Brother Business having their Oxford shoes one your face.

At one time I felt like maybe I could be a libertarian. But then I read some weird web sites and learned I might be an anarcho-capitalist.

I asked some doctors about it, but the lab results never came back: apparently they used an anarchist lab, who sent the results somewhere else. I guess that’s what anarchy means, though. :-)

Gonna have to agree. For a short period I was a Libertarian. However, I couldn’t abide with their “pro-choice on everything” stand. Murder of the unborn is something I will never be OK with.

I agree with what you wrote.

When my husband and I were active in the tea party I saw the move towards libertarianism in a number of tea party groups...… which meant no opening prayer. We did not comply.

Libertarians and Their Favorite Forms of Authoritarianism
[BUCK THROCKMORTON]

POLICE STATE LIBERTARIANS: Rep. Justin Amash: Amash’s principled libertarianism believes that unelected officials in America’s intelligence agencies, including the CIA, have a duty to try to unseat politicians that the deep state doesn’t approve of. Further, he supports spy agencies trying to frame and entrap law-abiding associates of those politicians as punishment for politically consorting with the wrong people.

TAX AND SPEND LIBERTARIANS: William Weld: Weld is a big government tax and spend liberal. As Massachusetts governor he not only went on a major spending spree with taxpayer money, but he was also anti-2nd Amendment, and a big fan of eminent domain. Weld was the Libertarian Party’s Vice-Presidential candidate in 2016, which makes perfect sense in a world where libertarian doesn’t mean libertarian.

BAKE THAT CAKE LIBERTARIANS: Gary Johnson: While Johnson is certainly a classic libertarian when it comes to dope – the dude likes to toke – he supported the government’s right to shutter a bake shop for not creating a custom cake that violated the business owner’s Christian faith. All the same, as Libertarian presidential candidate in 2016, Gary Johnson was the top choice among people who had to lie about the fact that they were actually going to vote for Donald Trump.

CORPORATIST LIBERTARIANS – Koch Brothers: The Kochs’ brand of libertarianism believes the government’s role is to serve and protect the largest corporations, providing them with a steady supply of cheap foreign labor, and protecting those corporations from upstart competition.

TECH TYRANNY LIBERTARIANS – Silicon Valley Executives & NeverTrump: Libertarian tech company executives atone for their massive profits, unfathomable wealth, and monopoly market shares by de-platforming citizens for expressing the wrong opinion. The authoritarian dream of denying Americans their Bill of Rights protections is being realized by outsourcing tyranny to monster tech monopolies. NeverTrump “conservatarians” who want to elect Democrats and have Trump voters de-platformed from American society are well represented here.

It seems that the definition of libertarian has transitioned. It was once the identity of individuals with varied “leave me alone” priorities. Now it is simply a euphemism embraced by

This is where a lot of pro-doper liberaltarians join the party. They want legalized pot. And especially the taxes that the state collects from legal weed. The fact that more taxes equals more spending equals bigger government is somehow "lost" on these so called small government types.

I loathe Losertarians. Almost to a man they are self-righteous, condescending and arrogant.

I’m for Maximum Liberty.

You do what you want to do. I do what I want to do.
CONSENTING ADULTS do what they want to do.
I don’t pay for you. You don’t pay for me.
Leave my kids alone. I leave your kids alone.
I hire who I want to hire. You hire who you want to hire.

Keep Illegals out.
Shutter the Federal Reserve.
Let Business do business.
Follow the Constitution.

OK? OK.

Overdue fines.

Overdue fines and telling you to “shush”.

Those are Librarians’ favorite forms of authoritarianism.

We have one trying to run for the Senate here in GA. His rants are all taxation is theft, legalize weed, all military actions without a vote from congress are acts of war, legalize weed, Trump is a war monger, the bumpstock ban proves Trump is anticipated 2A, all cops are evil, legalize weed.

I didn’t leave the Libertarian Party; the Libertarian Party left me.

It was one thing when Ron Paul and Bob Barr were Libertarian presidential candidates, even Ed Crane, but no more. How many present party members actually read Atlas Shrugged?

Trump is the closest the Libertarian Party has had to ever having a Libertarian in the White House.

People who call themselves Libertarians but who don’t abide by the non-aggression principle, the rights regarding private property, and who wish to expand government aren’t libertarians.

I want as little government intervention in my life as possible. I identify as a Libertarian.

I suggest spending time on Lew Rockwell’s page to see what kind of a rift there is amongst Libertarians, because it exists.

What isa libertarian these days? Mostly, these sound like LINOs.

The Libertarians had more of a Big Government ticket in 2016 than the GOP.
