(CNSNews.com) - West Virginia ranked No. 1 among the 50 states for its homeownership rate in 2018, which was 74.7 percent, according to new housing data released by the U.S. Census Bureau.
New York and California ranked 50th and 49th with homeownership rates of 51.0 and 55.1, according to Table 15 in the Census Bureaus Annual Statistics on Housing Vacancies and Homeownership.
The Census Bureau calculates the homeownership rate by dividing the number of owner occupied housing units by the total number of occupied housing units.

Kinduva feel good headline!!
Makes sense when you consider the average price of a house in California and New York compared to West Virginia.
If wonder where they rank in terms of people leaving their state? I'll bet it's close to the same ranking. Perhaps that should tell the politicians something about their tax rates, both on income and property.
see what the average home price is by state, and rank that list. see if there is a correspondence.
OK, I will say what the rest of us are thinking but are too afraid to say:
That’s because half of the “houses” in West Virginia are up on blocks. Hey, now where did I park my house?
OK, FRiends from WV. Flame away!
in West Virginia it does.
I would rather live in a home “up on blocks” in some remote hollow than “live” in a luxury high rise termite mound in NYC.
Ironically, one of the major economic impediments in places like West Virginia and other parts of Appalachia is a cultural resistance to moving. There are an inordinate number of people in those areas who would rather live close to their roots than migrate elsewhere for more lucrative job prospects.
Oh, the irony - the hicks outpace the coastal sophisticates in one of the major measurements of personal and family well-being.
Yeah, point taken, but the Clampets were from the Ozarks, either Missouri or Arkansas. I’m not sure the show was ever specific.
Granny was from Appalachian Tennessee prior to living in the Ozarks, presumably.
I’m not from WV, but the “houses on blocks” does sound like a stereotype. I’m sure the houses in WV are more modest than in Southern California, but that doesn’t mean they’re all lean-tos and double-wides.
West Virginia virgin: This is a gal that can out run her father/brother/uncle.
And compare the 18 - 24 months of permitting in those states before you drive a single nail vs W.Va.
Define ‘homeownership’. People with a mortgage? Paid off home? I doubt any state has a paid off mortgage rate in the 70%.
LOL...I was wondering if somebody would spot that!
This would seem to be the definition of “its all relative”.
California per capita income = $32,482
WV per capita income = $24,450
Wages are lower, prices of houses are lower.
Why the discrepancy in home ownership?
I think it would be settled/sedentary culture as opposed
to transient culture.
Almost Heaven WV.
