The Southern Democrat with the power to shut down Trump's convention
Politco ^ | May 8, 2020 | Maya King

North Carolina Roy Cooper has got a doozy on his hands.

He’s a Democratic governor, up for reelection in a Republican-leaning Southern swing state, pushing a go-slow approach to reopening the economy as protests intensify and neighboring states move quicker.

But that’s just the start: How the first-term governor handles his state's reopening will likely dictate whether President Donald Trump and the Republican Party can forge ahead with a full-fledged convention in Charlotte this summer.

Agreed. Bloviating from pompous party assholes who all hate Trump. I would only watch on the 4th night. Worse come to worse, ask Jerry Jones to host it in At&t stadium and give all the revenue to Texas.

Democrats are trashing President Trump for not doing enough about COVID-19 in February when the Democrat primary was in full swing, and now are suggesting that they mess with the Republicans' convention in August?

What would Democrats have said if Trump appeared to be tampering with their primary right after beating back their impeachment hoax?

And thumb the nose at the North Texas Council of Governments...it is Arlington, Texas not North Texas, Texas (2011 Super Bowl reference).

They need a boot up their collective @$$e$. I think they’re trying to make themselves like Northern Virginia, a cesspool of progressive idiocy.

My hunch is that a Federal judge just might overrule any shutdown order (on 1st Amendment grounds) just as a Federal judge just overruled RINO Governor Charlie Baker’s shutdown of gun shops in Massachusetts (on 2nd Amendment grounds).

"The CEO of Royal Caribbean is supposedly a Trump supporter. How about opening up one of those huge idled cruise ships. This would let Royal Caribbean show off its new anti-virus sanitation measures AND by taking the ship out to sea, foil the plans of any Antifa protester types. Give the delegates a 6-day cruise. Give the press interior cabins"

Great Out-Of-The-Box thinking 👍.

But the press should be assigned cots on a garbage scow towed behind the ship 😁.

The BBQ alone would make it worthwhile to move it just one state south....

He can host it at Mar-a-Lago for all I care. Any delegate with half a brain already knows a) the convention may not happen and b) Trump will emerge the nominee.

If I were Trump, I’d invite them all down to one of his resorts for a three-day convention and rally. Pass out a bunch of presidential autograph pens. Most of the delegates will feel it was a great time.

Shades of China threat to withhold drugs from the US. Lesson learned...never let China have the opportunity to get us over the barrel again. Move everything out of China, and let them suffer.

Lesson learned: never let Dems have the opportunity to get the Republican Party over the barrel again. Move the convention out of North Carolina, and never schedule a Republican Convention in a Dem state again. Remember to remind North Carolinians that their Dem governor cost the state millions of dollars in needed revenue.

If Cooper keeps the state shut down to prevent the convention, then the GOP will simply move to South Carolina or Texas, possibly Florida. But Cooper will have shot himself in the foot, along with many other Democrats, because they will have a lot of ticked off people in the state.

The ostensible purpose of a national party convention is to hold it in a swing state to show the party’s support. Typically, the governor, along with the big-city Democrat mayor, usually go along with the convention because of the multi-millions it brings into the city council’s slush funds / payola chest. But Democrats are more prone to prolong economic shutdowns, taking the chance that people will be more ticked off at the federal government for not subsidizing their enforced welfare vacation than at the local government for putting the screws on freedom.

So yeah, if Cooper prolongs the shutdown, the GOP should have a contingency plan set up in a Red State. Ft Worth is Democrat-run, but it is not completely communist-run yet, and they would probably be open to a convention. One more possibility is Atlanta if Georgia is going to be tight as well.

Typical Pollutico spin. Roy Cooper is an asshat. He’s going to lose in November. I’ve been waiting for years to vote against him.

Oh and no, it wasn’t bathroom confusion that allowed him to squeak out a narrow victory 4 years ago. It was mostly the hamfisted way the government had handled the building of and contracting for a major highway project.

As for Charlotte, the city leans heavily democrat thanks to a large Black population as well as an influx of Yankees. That said, they wanted to claim to be bipartisan and to be reasonable blah blah blah so given the DNC held its convention here a few years ago, they could hardly say “no” to the RNC holding its national convention here this year. It would not shock me one bit if they pulled some BS like trying to limit crowd size for it.
