Oh, you know. It’s a discussion everyone likes to have.
Personally, I drive a 25 year old F150. I like it. It gets the job done. Not for everybody. Not everyone can drive a 5 speed manual trans and most people think manual locking hubs are obsolete. But it works for me.
“Rock Island snub-nosed hammerless .38 ...”
Terrible advice. Hammerless revolvers are the worst.
Unless you are willing to put in serious range time, then a wheel gun (revolver) is the way to go. Mossberg makes some very good shotguns.
Lots of good advice replies about what to buy.
If your primary purpose in acquiring arms is self-defense, keep in mind that upon using the weapon for s-d, when the cops arrive, they are going to confiscate your firearm and you will need legal help, more $, to get it returned to you, if not guilty, and never returned, if found guilty.
Buy cheap, put the balance in an appreciating asset that will be liquid and available to pay legal fees (think thousands of $) as a consequence of using your self defense acquisition. Also, do practice, practice, practice with whatever you buy.
I bought the one with the grip safety, just the right weight and balance.
I’m sure someone already said this but ammo is more important.Something cheap and reliable that you can stock up on. No weird calibers.
I have a couple semi auto .22 rifles. They would be my gotos for most defense. I can keep a tin can in the air from my hip with them. I also have something loaded bird/buck/slug with magazines as long as my arm, but that would be for in close last stand stuff. Then there are the cans of aerosol starter fluid....
If you are a shot it once in a blue moon guy, glock. It’s the gun for dummies.
No safety, just a couple of pretend safeties, so you can shoot yourself quickly when needed.

Literally there are hundreds of occurrences of glock owners doing the “uh oh” thing.
Buy a gun with a REAL safety and LEARN how to use it. And Practice.
As for the “it takes too much time, I forget” arguments about a safety - that’s why you practice - it becomes automatic to you....
I have witnessed myself on the shooting range SEVERAL times, where people said after an accidental discharge that “The gun misfired - I didn’t pull the trigger, I swear, I just picked up the gun”.
I unload the gun, take out the magazine, double check it, and than ask them to repeat the draw. 100% of the time, they are placing their finger on the trigger when they grab.
Watch a PROFESSIONAL like the military - they walk around with the finger OUTSIDE of the trigger guard for a reason!
Glocks are great but IMO they are not for novices who lack trigger discipline. Very easy to put a hole in something you want to remain hole-free.
I've been there - big surprise! The range supervisor came over to see what had happened and asked if I was leaving to get it fixed. I guess he didn't like having a full-auto 1911 on the premises. Les Baer fixed it for free, and I don't blame them at all for the failure. I got a lot of use out of that gun before that particular surprise. BTW, I stuck my thumb in front of the hammer to stop it, stupidly since there was only one shot left, and that hammer hits really hard. I kept the 1911 and still fire it several times a week. That's my primary home-defense 1911, and it (new seer, a couple new barrels over time, etc.) is still amazingly accurate.
Unless you have “more money than you know what to do with” FORGET buying the “over-priced & FANCY” firearms & FIRST buy a QUALITY PUMP SHOTGUN by MOSSBERG or REMINGTON (Personally I prefer the Remington Model 870), a QUALITY .38 Special revolver by S&W or Ruger AND/OR a 9x19mm semi-auto pistol (I prefer my TISAS ZIGANA K in 9mm as an EDC & would NOT own a Glock if they were free.) AND ammo for both firearms.
Then, unless you are experienced with firearms (I presume that you are a new shooter.), I would advise you to seek out a GOOD shooting coach & invest a few hundred dollars in PROFESSIONAL TRAINING.
Then PRACTICE, PRACTICE & PRACTICE with your new firearms.

“Glock 19. Reliable and inexpensive to shoot. It does an excellent job of taking care of problems with chunks of lead.”
I absolutely agree. In my humble opinion the Glock 19 is the best 9mm handgun on the market for the price.
The Ford F150 is like the Glock 19: Basic and damn near perfect.
“Watch a PROFESSIONAL like the military - they walk around with the finger OUTSIDE of the trigger guard for a reason!”
Most professionals I know (military and LEO) like Glocks, even if they are not their service weapons.
Every handgun design has it’s advantages and dis advantages. I absolutely love my SW 38+P Airweight, Hammerless, snub nose. Fits in my jacket, coat, hoody pocket....Hammerless, which means I can squeeze off 5 shots through my pocket, unseen, and not worry about a hammer or slide catching the fabric and jamming.Quite accurate, unseen, and with practice could hit an 18” plate at 10-12 ft,...yes, I have holes in my sacrificed hoody pocket, lots of them....I am on my third iron on patch for practice....there are advantages of not having to take 1.5-2 seconds plus to draw from the waist holster, assume grip, stance, squeeze trigger. Posted for consideration.
I drive a Ford Explorer and currently have a Kahr CW .45 on my hip.....
Im also done with my high end luxury car phase and just into practical, comfortable and reliable....
....and yes I am also the one who advocates a bayonet lug being mounted on to your shotgun....and an 8” US M8 bayonet is cheap and multi- functional.
Ruger DA revolver in .357 Mag or larger, Mossberg 500/590 12 gauge.
Mine is more like a 1911: basic, damn near indestructable and too complicated to operate for most SJWs
