SIG Sauer: Army Next Generation Squad Weapon Winner?

The U.S. Army’s Next Generation Squad Weapon (NGSW) program is ambitious: replace both the iconic M4 carbine and the M249 Squad Automatic Rifle, both of which are in wide service in the United States armed forces. The NGSW program dictates that contenders are to submit two rifle designs, one to replace the M4, the other to replace the M249. And though the projectile the platforms are to fire has been predetermined, many other facets of the program are up to the firearms manufacturers themselves.

In the running are Textron, General Dynamics — and SIG Sauer. Meet their two rifle designs.

SIG Sauer

SIG Sauer’s automatic rifle and rifle designs are perhaps the least radical of the three companies vying for the Army’s NGSW contract. Their rifle design is a conventional, magazine-fed design with what appears to be an inward-folding, collapsible stock that allows for a more compact platform, a rear and side charging handle, and ambidextrous controls.

Looks like it has a nice heavy barrel...I like the quick-detach suppressor.....but whenever I see the foward assist and case deflector I think back to the M16 I trained with in 68’

A new 6.8mm round.....wonder what the ballistics are like?

Is this to rifles what the .40cal is to semi-pistols?

There’s something very disquieting about all of these wonderful weapons and boxes being displayed...with all of the employees standing around in masks.

The ballistics are tremendous. Far flatter trajectory than a 7.62 and superior killing power to the 5.56. It’s a huge jump in small arms performance. I thought SiG would win (i’ve seen all three weapons in competition). SiG’s solution is the least radical change with the best performance.

This is very impressive.

Will require a dedicated 6.8mm ammo production line.

Unfortunately, since Sig is an American company, and the globalist are on the brink of coming back into power, the contract will go to a multi-national company that is front for the CCP, so that the Biden’s will get their share of kick backs. /S

The abandonment of the 5.56 stems from DoD taking the decision that future small arms needed to be capable of defeating body armor, and the projectiles that the poodle-shooter .223 is capable of driving to a reasonable velocity all are too low in weight to support that objective.

Even before WWII, John Garand was floating the idea that something in the .270 range was the ideal caliber for a battle rifle, which is why the prototypes for his M1 Garand were chambered in .276 Pedersen. But that idea got scrapped before the rifle went into production because DoD already had a gazillion rounds of .30-06 Springfield that was manufactured during WWI gathering dust in its munitions depots.

The cartridge Sig created for this weapon, BTW, was just standardized by SAAMI in the last couple of weeks. Called the .277 Fury, it's dimensionally very close to a 7mm-08, with one exception.

It's maximum (SAAMI) chamber pressure is 80,000 psi. If you're not familiar with such things, the Pmax for the hottest rifle cartridges currently available is only about 65,000 psi. Barrel wear tends to vary directly with chamber pressure, so this cartridge likely will set a new standard for "barrel-burners." It's so much pressure that Sig reckoned it was too intense for a brass cartridge casing so they used a two-piece casing with a steel case head joined to a brass case body by a lock ring.

Sig went to that extreme so they could meet both objectives of minimum projectile mass and minimum muzzle velocity. They claim this thing will drive a 135-grain bullet to 3000 fps ... from a 16-inch barrel.

Which is impressive ... for so long as the barrel lasts. To my thinking it's not exactly ideal for use in a weapon intended to be employed primarily in the fully automatic mode.

I’m not sure where your sarcasm is in your statement, but Sig isn’t an American company.

SIG Sauer, Inc. SIGARMS, Inc. is a German company, and it’s parent company is Lüke & Ortmeier Holding Gruppe. Maybe it should be a requirement that an American company should make our military small arms?

Is International Harvester still making tractors? Maybe we can call them back into action for this weapon.

80,000 PSI would wipe out a barrel real quick.

Great!! Glad to hear that the ballistics are that strong....

We need to keep the “tip of the spear” sharper than our enemies.....
