When I attended last year’s White House Black History Month reception, it appeared few of us took note that it was the 50th anniversary of such observances. Then George Floyd and Black Lives Matter happened, seemingly changing things forever—particularly a reevaluation of the black experience.
Concerted efforts to commemorate black history go back almost a century. In 1926, black historian Carter G. Woodson designated the second week in February as “Negro History Week.” He selected the days between the birthdays of Abraham Lincoln on the 12th and Frederick Douglass on the 20th.

These people still exist, but their accomplishments are buried by the left wing racists who only peddle an ugly mythology. The fact is that hard work, real education in real subjects, and perseverance will always win the day. Doesn't matter what your race is.

With today the birthday of Frederick Douglass, it would do all of America well to read his “Up From Slavery” on how the emancipated black population could find its way successfully in a largely white country.
He had a particularly strong distaste for identity politics.

Yes it is. Watched a documentary a few weeks ago about Black business people and was struck by how many self-made millionaires there were during what we would call the Jim Crow era. Not something I was very much aware of before watching.
If Black history gets a month, then White history gets 5 years, and 3000 years of Chinese history gets 8 years.
Wait until the surprise ending at the trial of George Floyd’s “killer”.
In grade school back in the 1950s I remember learning about George Washington Carver, Booker T. Washington, Harriet Tubman and Harriet Beecher Stowe in history classes. Not in black history classes, but as part of plain ol’ American History while covering the appropriate events and time frames.
Frederick Douglas was a Republican.
