The same people who could not make a healthcare website despite billions of dollars in funding it.

The website, and obamacare weren't designed to succeed.

I refuse to believe that the NSA could not figure out where this came from.

They almost certainly know by now who the perpetrators are.

The perpetrators almost always are based in a foreign country and have the protection of their local governments. either through bribery of officials or explicit policy sanction. "Everybody" in their local scene knows who they are.

It takes very nasty and covert diplomatic efforts to get them - or overt acts of war.

The Biden-Harris administration is incapable, and possible unwilling, to succeed at either option. These are the people who "Never let a crisis go to waste". They don't solve a crisis.

I think these are only the business systems and not the SCADA which should be air-gapped. They’re just going to have to pay to get their data unencrypted. It sucks but cryptoware is nasty stuff.

Yup Keystone shut down and the Colonial is a private affair or so biden says. Open them both up. Finish the Keystone Pipeline.

If NSA employees have gone woke, they probably can't even reboot a computer.

Why can't they just restore their backups?

Yes, this Regime decision stinks and makes it seem like they are either involved or know who is and they are on the same side of screwing over the US.

Presuming they have backups. You would hope.

At the core of it, Colonial Pipeline must have rotten IT security because a ransomeware attack requires admin privileges to the data servers to work.

Presuming they have backups.

Say it isn't so. Failure to back up that data would earn a failing grade in Introduction to Computing for Preschoolers.

This has been happening for awhile now and not any of these big companies have not done one thing to increase their cybersecurity, or worse they put it all in the Cloud, which is very hackable.

It doesn’t work that way. The hackers have introduced a very sophisticated virus that has infiltrated the computer system and they control it. You pay and they will let you have control of your system again. Of course that will lead to a complete reprogramming of the system and new software to prevent this from happening again.

It doesn’t work that way.

Thanks for responding, but why specifically should restoring bare-metal backups followed by differential backups fail to restore functionality to all of the computers in this network? You don't need to have "control of your system" to do that. You just need access to the hardware. Restoring the backups should recreate the system.

As usual they are lying. It is technically not illegal to pay cyberransom. However, the Treasury Department last year issued it's Advisory on Potential Sanctions Risks for Facilitating Ransomware Payments. It's complicated, but the bottom line is if payment violates one of Treasury's regulations prohibiting paying money to bad guys the payer may be subject to stiff penalties. And, of course, they will tell you this after you pay.

Here's how one journal reported it:"Paying Ransom is Now Illegal! U.S. Dept of Treasury Warns."
