I don’t think so. The US press actually saved Elians life by posting pictures of him on the front pages.
At the same time it made him valuable to Fidel as a show piece. Wasn’t Elians picture circulated showing him in the Castro Jr revolutionaries or whatever? Powerful propaganda that.
