Who says old people hate new music?

I’ve gone the other way, learning to appreciate the music from my parents’ era that hadn’t appealed to me growing up, plus some Glenn Miller and Artie Shaw.

I agree. Once I discovered el Rushbo and sports talk radio I stopped listening to most new music.

The psychological aspects are certainly worth taking seriously.

But it also may be a factor that the music industry has been sucking for well over 20 years.

Interesting. Mostly true, but not with all music heard. Some modern music does have a nice flavor to it, but most of it is trash and a lot of screaming, yelling and noise compared to the actual MUSIC I remember in my younger years.

That didn’t really happen to me for music. I still discover new artists that I can enjoy very much, but I still of course listen to most of the jams I favored as a younger man. Right now I’m enjoying the voice of Dylan McDermott.

I never stopped exploring musically. Which is great. Lots of great new music. Not to mention “old” music I missed along the way. I just have the addiction. And work in a situation where I can listen to music all day.

In my case, I love music from the Seventies and before.

Of course, that is just my opinion, and a large part of my life experiences.

I just prefer to not hear THUMP-THUMP-SCREECH Oooga Booga Kill Cops Hoes that could have been created in the jungle 10,000 years ago. If you can call that crap “music.”

Innovation in music exploded in the late 50s, the 60s, and the early 70s. After that, there was little new. Even in that era, bands had to win over Big Music to get any distribution and radio airtime. You were forced to listen to what THEY wanted you to listen to. I remember this mold just starting to break in 1968 when I discovered K-SHE FM “underground” FM in St. Louis. You got to hear a lot of music that never would see the light of day on the Top 40 format. The Top 40 music was mostly lowest-common-denominator crap.

With the advent of Spotify, Pandora, Apple Music, Qobuz, Tidal, Deezer, Amazon Music, etc, it has become so easy to find music from new bands that you like.

My musical tastes have evolved a lot. I just don’t enjoy listening to the hard rock / psychedelic rock I enjoyed as a teen.

My adult daughter called my music ‘fogey music’....... Led Zeppelin, AC/DC, Moody Blues, etc.

Then one day she discovered THE BEATLES..................................

Because most new music is crap. No hooks, no melodies. Gimme some Allman Bros. or, The Eagles and we can rock.

It’s amazing how the military experience can bond a person to certain music. For my dad it was “Sentimental Journey “ (WWII); for me it was “Leaving on a Jet Plane” (Vietnam).

Nah, not buying it.

Last June there were several High School Graduation parties in my immediate neighborhood. They had DJs and I could hear the music from my house or just walking around the neighborhood. (No I am not old and didn’t call the cops)

But I was amazed that the vast majority of songs they played at these parties were contemporary songs from the 70’s, 80’s and 90’s. I didn’t hear too many new songs.

The playlists were not much different from the playlist you would have heard at my High School Graduation party 30+ years ago

So yeah, it’s not us “old people”, even kids today know music today sucks

I frequently see teens and young adults marvel at the Beatles and ask why their generation doesn’t produce music like that.

"We know that musical tastes begin to crystallize as early as age 13 or 14. By the time we’re in our early 20s, these tastes get locked into place pretty firmly."

Having grown up listening to a wide variety of music, I believe one main reason many older people reject so-called "new music" is because it is not really "music." And the lyrics are even worse.
