Star conductor and close friend of Putin dropped by his management ahead of deadline to speak out or be fired from Munich Philharmonic

Russia’s star conductor, Valery Gergiev, has been dropped by his management over his close ties to Vladimir Putin as he faces a looming deadline to publicly denounce the Russian president or lose yet another role in his rapidly crumbling career.

The 68-year-old Russian, an old friend and supporter of Putin, has faced increasing pressure to speak out against Russia’s invasion of Ukraine over the last week. He has been removed from performances around the world and faces more professional punishment if he does not condemn Putin’s aggression in the next 24 hours.

On Sunday, his manager, Marcus Felsner, announced he would be dropping Gergiev, who he called “the greatest conductor alive and an extraordinary human being with a profound sense of decency”, but who “will not, or cannot, publicly end his long-expressed support for a regime that has come to commit such crimes.”

I think Pootypoot is a shiitebird, but this guy has the right to choose his friends. Is there some special musical note he’s unable to generate as a result of his friendship with Pugilist Putin?

There’s the expression “to damn him with faint praise” so maybe he should “praise him with faint damning”.

The more the politically correct want me to do something the less I would want to do it just to upset them.

This guy....great conductor...

One of Gergiev’s signature images is when he conducts with a toothpick in hand instead of a traditional baton. “It absolutely doesn’t matter what I have in hand,” Gergiev said in an interview ahead of his Shanghai concert. “What matters is what a conductor has in his eyes, mind and heart.

All Russians have to do some serious soul searching because a lot of decent people did support Putin in exchange for patriotic glory, and did ultimately have some hand in appeasing and enabling the monstrous regime.

I don’t agree with all the demands that Gergiev denounce Putin. The world listened to Russian conductors and orchestras and composers all through the Cold War and did not demand they denounce anyone. If Gergiev has to denounce Putin you know any friend of Trump will be forced to denounce him as well.

If the guy were in charge of the defense of Ukraine, it would make sense to fire him for sympathizing with Putin, or even perhaps if he was in charge of teaching kids and was indoctrinating them to love Putin etc. But he is a conductor and as far as I can tell his job has nothing to do with his opinion. It is a horrible violation of basic human rights and counter productive to start persecuting people just for their opinions and drive them out of their jobs. Unless the guy is taking a knee for Putin at the beginning of each concert or some such, let him have his opinion about matters. Even though I think he is wrong, we are all safer and better off when people are at least allowed to have their own opinion then when people are forced to pretend to have an opinion they do not.

To be fair I bet a lot of ‘close friends’ of Putin are shocked that he did this.

A new wave of cancel. Anything Russian is the new white supremacist.

In giving in to some of the Soviet nostalgia and for Russian empire hunger to flourish, it’s precisely the Russians that have kept the Soviet cancel culture legacy and spirit alive for the rest of the world. They need to bury Lenin once for all and out the USSR to rest for good.

With national security laws behind it, this will make the Covid State look as free as the Shire.

Which is one of the reasons the Deep State wanted a war so bad.

There's plenty on the left and the right that would and will do this.

FReepers cheering for cancel culture.

Unreal.

The guy has NOTHING to do with the invasion!

Compelling him to endanger his family in Russia by speaking out against the Russian regime is what we’ve come to expect from the fascist globalists.

A pox on the cancel culture and its junkies and groupies.

Compromise. Let him perform, but only use one arm. That way he can boycott with half of his body. This would also have the serendipitous effect of aiding us in easing our shortage of semiconductors.
