It’s easy to spend that much on a nice car, a big house, fancy phone, and dining out all the time. That’s what they call “living the dream”.

Between inflation and the stock market many retired people are in a world of hurt.

For working people, 100k is not very much money anymore. Especially on the coasts. Housing costs can easily be 3-4k/month.

The USA is a seriously mismanaged country.

“How long until the hood rats start hijacking loads of gasoline and holding up gas stations?”

That hadn’t even occurred to me, yet! You’re probably not wrong.

It happened in 1974 - when we were in slightly worse shape than today, under Carter:

“A tank truck loaded with 3,000 gallons of gasoline was hijacked at gunpoint last night at Commerce and Zarega Avenues in the Westchester section of the Bronx, the police reported.

The driver of the truck, identified as William Weber, 24 years old, told the police of the Bennedict Avenue precinct that he was traveling down Zarega Avenue when a man suddenly jumped in front of the vehicle, a 1972 Mack truck, operated by the Island Transporation Company, 299 Main Street, Westbury, Long Island.

Mr. Weber told the police he had jammed on the brakes, nearly hitting the man in the street, who then pulled a gun and ordered him from the cab of the truck. Suddenly Mr. Weber said, a second man appeared, handcuffed him and placed a blindfold over his eyes, and forced him into an automobile.

The incident began shortly after 6 P.M., Mr. Weber told the police. He said he was driven around in the car until 8:45, then released at 233d Street and White Plains Road in the Wakefield section of the North Bronx where he reported the theft to the police of the 47th Precinct at 229th Street. He was unharmed.”

My boss and I were discussing the stats of people living paycheck to paycheck the other day. We have seen stats like this for years. Then, COVID happened, people out of work, dropping out of the work force, etc. How did these people survive? I know we had extra government money for a while, but that has long since dried up. If you have millions of people living paycheck to paycheck, and the paychecks have stopped, where are all the starving, homeless people? I’m not discounting the study; this is a legitimate question.

One of our DILs watched my wife, who is recovering from a hip replacement yesterday morning, while I did errands and bought groceries at about 10 am.

The semi local small store owned by a big chain was basically empty of customers. I was able to place orders at the deli, produce section and meat market without standing in line.

When I was ready to checkout, there was no customers in line besides me.

I asked the checker, “Where all of the customers were?”

Her reply was simple, “They can only afford gas this week!”

Our county/city and state had some of the highest gas prices in the nation, over the weekend. The gas prices were increasing daily and hourly at some stations after the weekend.

A very large % of the customers in this store are retired or semi retired.

What was interesting was the heavy traffic to and from the little mall in spite of the gas prices.

There is a large underground and/or gig economy out there.

Most of the folks using it are not making much money, but it can help them scrape by....

You have family that paid back a loan?!?!?!?!
WOW!!!!
You live a charmed life.

I’ve managed to “loan” my sister’s daughters enough money that I never hear from them...haven’t in years.
My sister is another matter entirely. ‘Though we no longer speak (my choice) she at least acknowledges (my insistance) the monthly assistance I provide her.

Back then the oil/transport companies started using security details in unmarked cars trailing the tankers around.
Sales of locking gas caps soared

P2P (zero savings) is about the worst budget decision ever. It can sort-of work in really good times. These aren’t really good times.

I worked my way thru high school pumping gas from 3 to 9 pm. I did my homework inside that little shack on the center island between customers. $2.55 per hour. 1975 to 1977. The gas craziness was more around 1974 and 1975. It mellowed out by 1977. Went above a dollar in 1979. The little meters had to be tweeked to .13 per gallon to record $1.13 on the displays. It was nutz.

64% live paycheck to paycheck and 61% pay no income taxes. These numbers sure seem related.
