There is large overlap when you superimpose those bell curves onto one graph. Yes, at the far right end, there will be more whites than blacks percentage twice than near the middle.
The average IQ of East Asians (Chinese, Japanese, etc.) is higher than whites, so they will predominate at the far right end of the curve, too. Still lots of overlap, though.
If you calculated bell curves for whites and blacks on athletic ability, you’d probably find the same, except the blacks would predominate at the far right tail end.
Some black people have higher IQs than some white people. Some white people don’t have an IQ in the range needed to succeed in some fields; same for blacks. While fewer black people are to be found on the extreme high end, there are some to found, such as Dr. Ben Carson and Thomas Sowell. Just as there are are some gifted and talented white athletes to be found on the extreme high end of athletic ability where blacks predominate.
The point is this. There are plenty of black people in this country who have sufficient IQ to succeed at achieving a high school or college diploma. The percentage might be slightly less, but except at the extreme tail ends of the curve, not all that big a deal. Same deal for whites and athletics. Lots of whites have sufficient ability to perform well enough. It’s at the extreme tail ends of the curve the disparity becomes all too obvious.
So what’s the problem? My guess is cultural. Lots of black children have the idea that studying hard and trying to do well in school is “trying to act white” and a betrayal of their people. Libs both black and white tell them they are disadvantaged and victims of racism and therefore cannot succeed. So why should these kids even try? These beliefs also give the kids an excuse to goof off rather than exercise discipline, and we all know kids love an excuse to goof off and that discipline isn’t exactly fun. Also, a higher percentage of black children lack fathers in their homes, and we all know Dads are really good at instilling discipline in their kids, especially their sons.
Dr. Ben Carson and Thomas Sowell were encouraged to work hard, to learn to discipline themselves and to develop their God-given abilities and talents to their full potential. How many black children were not?
It really is true the blacks must solve this for themselves. Stop listening to the hucksters who tell them they are destined for failure, whether black or white — these people have their own agendas, not the best interests of black children at heart. Take stock of themselves, see where they’ve gone wrong.
At the same time, our larger society, both black and white, need to accept reality. Life is not fair in the sense the libs insist it be and even *is*. It’s not fair that that a random white baby has a statistically lower chance of becoming a professional football player than a black baby. It’s not fair that a random black baby has a statistically lower chance of becoming a groundbreaking brilliant scientist than a white or East Asian baby. But it is what it is.
Sorry libs, but you are living in lalaland. Equity is an unrealistic goal. Reality is not as you wish it to be. We’re not all born with equal abilities and talents and innate intelligence.
On the other hand, the good news is that most of us, no matter our race, are born with sufficient abilities and innate intelligence to get along reasonably well in life (see bell curves). It’s up to us to develop our potential through hard work and discipline.
We need a return to sanity, which is best defined (IMHO) as “ongoing dedication to reality, no matter what the cost”. The libs who insist that reality is as they wish it to be are nuts, sorry. While they seem to believe their motives are good and humanitarian, in reality they are detrimental to the human race, and their policies more akin to C.S. Lewis’ Dictator:

There is a growing “democratic” impulse to “be like Stalks” among whites as well. Whether black or white, such an impulse bodes no good for us all.
IQ may not be a genetic thing. In American universities, Orientals and Indians achieve higher grades and reach PhD level more often than whites, as a percentage of population in America. It has to do with family backgrounds. Oreiental and Indian parents push their kids harder to achieve higher goals.
I agree but for a somewhat different set of reasons. Prior to the negro establishment being pretty much completely co-opted by the religion of politics pushed by liberals the emphasis within the negro community was on ‘upward striving’, be clean, neat, orderly and mannerly, work hard, get all the education (then called learning) you can, get married, have a family, be a good neighbor and good parent, child, citizen, etc. This along with the gospel of the straight and narrow , was preached every Sunday in most churches. The Civil Rights Struggle changed the orientation to mobilization for the (very peaceful) struggle. The liberals began to seriously push the religion of politics onto the negro community at this time. The doctrines of collective entitlement, victimology, community salvation through electing democrats and then black democrats was heavily promoted. Now decades later after city after city has had a procession of black mayors, black police chiefs, black superintendents of education, virtually all black slates of aldermen, black school principles, etc., the millennium hasn’t arrived and in spite of real and obvious material improvement in the lives of most negroes the state of their community is Hobbesian. Why? Because white liberals and their posionious secular humanist-cultural marxist ideology have stolen the souls of black folks and made them hard hearted, pettily calculating,and cruel. The family, that was along with the church, the two things poor blacks could hold on to in times of want, hardship and violence have been; in the case of the family destroyed, in the case of the church turned into an agit prop agency for ethnic resentment and entitlement and always politics. Liberal politicized secular humanism has ruined the black community and makes real cultural and academic progress as problematic as everything else for these people. IQ very much is innate (though not strictly heritable — see “regression toward the mean”).
Achieving high grades is not exactly the same as having a high IQ, although a sufficiently high IQ is a prerequisite. Someone with an IQ of say, 118, who is disciplined and works hard can achieve the same high grade average or SAT score as someone with an IQ of say, 127, who is less disciplined and does not work as hard.
If you look at the IQ scores of Indian children living in India at early ages, they are lower than whites and East Asians. But if you look at grades and SAT scores in the US, Indians score higher than whites and almost up there with East Asians because, as you correctly pointed out,their parents tend to push them to work hard and achieve (and perhaps also because those who move here tend to have IQs than their average countrymen).

Black people really do have to work twice as hard, in my opinion, to live the American Dream, but that’s a good thing — exceptionalism is always a good thing — because most who succeed (outside of crappers and thuggies) have earned it, they know they’ve earned it, and that makes for good Americans.
Good question, and I confess I honestly don’t know. If I spent a bunch of time with Tin Eye, I might figure it out but ... I simply don’t have the time.
You can do your own search and find various IQ maps that might specify whether mean or median was used to generate them.
Something I left out of my last post is this. Malnutrition and deprivation of stimuli (fewer opportunities to explore and play, interact with other humans, manipulate objects in the environment, etc.) at early ages likely affect IQ as well as severe childhood illnesses (possibly especially those inducing very high fevers, such as malaria and dengue).

I must be blessed with very high IQ because Mechanical engineers are known to be at the high end for IQ. My bachelor’s degree was from India, and masters degree from University of Iowa. In my jobs as a mechanical engineer, I was able to develop expert software to train the brainless but fanastic memory creature known as digital computer to design the machines we built. Those machines are used by auto, appliance & aircraft builders to manufacture large parts such as car bodies, car doors, wheel axels etc. The aoftware designed the entire machine in a few seconds which required many weeks with manual design procedures. After having done the design part, I branched into developing expert software for numerically controlled lathes, drills, flame cutting machines etc. This was all done by me without any guidance on what to do. My company soon drove our both major competitors out of business. It had to be high IQ I was blessed with.

Re the deprivation of stimuli: I had in mind those ghastly commie orphanages where the babies and little ones were kept isolated and imprisoned in cribs with almost no human interaction and no toys, etc.
A kid growing up with few toys (whether “educational” or no) in an environment with sufficient human interaction and freedom to explore and play would not be so affected. Besides, if we listened to our grandparents’ stories, or lived in a country where kids have precious few toys, we know kids will figure out a way to make their own toys.
Indeed you must! My Dad was a brilliant scientist with a PhD in chemical engineering, (also nuclear physics) and he made our world a better, safer place. He was down-to-earth and humble (in the positive Christian sense) and had more respect for competent technicians and janitors with accumulated wisdom than dilettantes smartypants with fancy degrees. Of course he also had great respect for his fellow scientists who were Real Scientists dedicated to the honest pursuit of science.
His IQ was way, way up there, but he was incredibly disciplined and hard working and did not skate by on innate intelligence alone. As I said, he was humble in the good sense of that word, so it was from his once-upon-a-time fellow grad students that I learned he could do advanced calculus in his head. They said it got their goats that, as a poor grad student, he could hock his slide rule and still get perfect scores on exams. I knew he had won scientific awards and medals, but did not know of them all until after he died. He kept them in a dresser drawer. I was was overcome when I went through it and saw how many. Perhaps I still don’t know all and never will.
Nope, I did not inherit his scientific brilliance. I guess I must have “regressed toward the mean”. :) — or maybe that should be :(
In addition to being blessed with a high IQ, you were likely encouraged to creatively develop strategies to overcome obstacles and achieve goals in your childhood. Just a guess on my part, but that’s what it looks like to me.
