LOL
No, been a space fan since I watched Alan Shepard on Freedom 7 take a ride into space. Saw it on a neighbor’s little oval-screened black and white TV. I was only 6 but I’ll never forget it.
Loved the movie Space Cowboys too. Oh, wait, that was fiction. Loved Apollo 13 too! :)
Ha! Was hoping for a pertinent Far Side cartoon. Thanks.
We have more than just STEREO orbiting the sun?
There was one in the 1860s thet messed up the telegraph system
Nice shot!
The Carrington Event in 1859. That was the discovery of solar flares by Richard Carrington. It is the biggest solar flare known but they have found evidence in ice cores of similar sized flares. Apparently they happen about every 500 years on average.
But there have been significant solar flares since then. There was one in ‘72 that knocked out telephone communications in Illinois. One in ‘89 that disrupted electrical transmission in Quebec causing a blackout for six million homes for nine hours. One in 2005 that knocked out GPS for about ten minutes. And one in 2006 that the GOES-13 satellite took pics of that damaged the equipment that took the pics. That one wasn’t aimed at the Earth though.
☺
Its so dark some streets are named MLK
Proxima Centauri shoots out humongous flare, with big implications for alien life
The far side was always great!
“There is no dark side of the Moon. As a matter of fact it’s all dark.”
You be sorta right. The Moon only reflects the Sun’s light.
But, the side of the Moon that faces the Sun, is lit up so
you can count the fingers of your hand! So there!
You be right, y’all, all y’all! Das right.
Democrats are blaming cow farts.
I was driving up to Green Bank one summer night and came into a valley on a moonless night with no clouds. The starlight was so bright I could see cattle two hundred yards away and when I accidentally dropped some coins from my camera bag I could see them on the ground behind my Isuzu Rodeo. The Milky Way stretched from horizon to horizon and I watched a satellite reflecting sunlight go to the horizon. THAT was one very memorable event for me.
Sorry, but I’m taken.
Then, when a Carrington scale event happens, calamity will ensue because nobody talks about hardened electronics anymore..
Jeffrey Tobin is behind the Sun?
