An 18-inch pipe bomb was found on train tracks behind St. Dominic’s Catholic Church in Philadelphia on Sunday afternoon.

Philadelphia police are investigating after a pipe bomb was reportedly discovered behind a church in Holmesburg.
Philadelphia police sources tell FOX 29 an 18-inch pipe bomb was found Sunday, just after 1:30 p.m., behind St. Dominic’s Catholic Church, on the 8500 block of Frankford Avenue, in Philadelphia’s Holmesburg section.
Officials say a passerby found the pipe bomb, and noted it was a PVC pipe with capped ends and black powder on it.

Every time I see a pipe-bomb story I need to read the whole thing. Years ago in Toledo they raided a garage and called the 4” SCH40 steel pipe with handles welded on, a pipe-bomb.

What you missed mostly is the fact that the gunpowder was in a PVC pipe. Those pipes burst at 250-300PSI, which means the bomb wouldn’t develop enough pressure to cause much damage to something as durable as a railroad track. Black powder charges must be confined within a rather stout container so that useful pressure can be achieved. An actual explosive, like C4, needs only about a 1/2 pound uncontained charge to sever a rail.
