Former Dodger Steve Garvey considers U.S. Senate bid in California

You’d have to go back a generation — to 1988 — to find the last time a Republican candidate won a U.S. Senate race in heavily Democratic California. This time, the party might get an MVP on the ballot.

Baseball legend Steve Garvey, who played for the Los Angeles Dodgers and San Diego Padres, is meeting with voters and senior GOP officials as he weighs a potential 2024 Senate bid in a race that already has several prominent Democratic contenders in the field. He appeared at a recent fundraiser for Republican Rep. Michelle Steel in Orange County, where he signed baseballs and talked about his potential candidacy.

Garvey might be the Republicans' best chance to get a Republican candidate on the November 2024 ballot. So far he's the most well known Republican considering running for Senate.

Can residual popularity from being a sports star, overcome the Democrat advantage in California? Time will tell.

California would probably prefer a catcher than a first baseman.

With the Jungle primary the Republicans need to decide who has the best shot and only have that person on the ballot. If they split the vote in any way they lose. Only hope is that the Dems have a lot of candidates splitting their vote. Then again if the Dems split to many ways it may be an opportunity to limit Rs to two good ones.

It’s an uphill fight for any Republican in California for a statewide office.

I thought Garvey would run for a political office since his Dodger days. Garvey getting two women pregnant at the same time he was dating (and eventually marrying) a third woman sidetracked him but now it doesn’t matter in politics.

Will Cyndy vote for him?

That only applies to Democrats.

You'd also have to go back a generation to find people in California who remember Steve Garvey. His window for office was open back in the early '90s - he should have taken it then.

I do recall he did some ads for Jockey. Might get him the women’s vote.

Garvey has no chance. He’s finish behind Lee, Shitts, and Porter in a straight up vote. The media will unfairly destroy him.

IIRC his wife or ex-wife accused him of being abusive towards her. So, he’s done before gets out of the gate.

Garvey might be a "Republican". But when you start fund raising with Michael Steel. Republican is a word that should be used very loosely.

Garvey retired from baseball 36 years ago at has not played for the Dodgers for 40 years. A voter would have to be at least 45 to even remember Garvey playing ball.

In California, 79% of voters are under the age of 46.

My husband did a bunch of work for Mr. Garvey and if he runs he will be getting our maximum contribution! He’s a very good man who does business on a handshake and can be trusted to do what he says he will do!

“Good baseball player, good man”.

I totally agree.

So get ready for the nuts and sluts onslaught.

And Giants' fans have no use for him. Garvey was an excellent player, just one level down from HoF level. He was a multi-Gold Glove 1st Baseman despite being 5'9". He is built more like a 3rd Baseman, but threw wild, so they moved him. Could hit for average or power, whatever the manager wanted.

Oh, and he was SAFE at home plate in game one of the '77 World Series against the Yankees, regardless of what Nester "Louis Braille" Chylak called.

I think he’ll choose to not run. Too high a mountain. There was a time though-b4 he knocked up those 2. Then there’s Cindy-crazy.

A trainer on the team was asked to call all Philadelphia hospitals to see if his daughter was in one. Cindy called him out of the blue to tell him that. Just before game time. Sicko.

Steve’s base are SoCal white dude baseball fans over age 50 who are not still mad that he left the Dodgers for the Padres, and Padre fans that were not upset that the Padres lost the 1984 World Series.

I don’t know much about his politics but, as a kid, I used some of his training techniques to generate a lot more wrist action in my swing and it totally worked!
