Critical thinking skills —even those of the average 8th grader 40 years ago— are absent. The generation taking the reins has been enculturated by whatever their ‘phones’ have fed them. My early 20-something nieces think I’m weird because I own a dictionary. They go into a genuine panic when their phones alert them that their batteries have only 20% capacity remaining.
And another thing (!): I was looking at a 1965 High School yearbook last night. A medium sized school in Northern California. The kids —and everyone else— looked HAPPY, and each seemed to radiate a distinct nature. You could tell there was something going on behind their eyes, which mostly sparkled. THAT was the world I was born into. Living in present times, I often feel surrounded by soulless zombies. Zero personality.
