Haha. I remember this song from somewhere.

It does seem that the crow wasn’t trying to kill the hedgehog. Interesting.
I like to leave snacks for the crows and see where they hide them for later attention. They even recognize me when I come back to visit the same area and call out to their friends. If you spend enough time around crows you can kind of work out what their calls mean and predict what they might be up to next. Around here if you have a white plastic bag (eg; from a convenience or grocery store) and leave it unattended, it’s almost a guarantee that crows will gather and wait for the time that enough distance is between me and the bag before they swoop in and take a look or even just pick up the bag and hang it in a tree for later inspection.

I heard an avian expert say crows are self-aware and also understand the concept of death.

The crow was trying to find a way to EAT that prickly potential meal.

Ha. I have a family of crows I occasionally feed bread to, I love their calls. When I go out to throw the bread, they make coo like sounds.

what is crow epistemology?

Crow epistemology is a term coined by Ayn Rand to refer to the principle that human beings can only deal perceptually with five or six units simultaneously. The “Crow” label refers to a psychological experiment where three people went into the woods, and the crows would go into hiding until all three people came out. This experiment was used to illustrate that crows have a limited cognitive capacity and cannot track more than a few objects at the same time.

RE:They even recognize me when I come back to visit the same area and call out to their friends.

They say millions of people are isolated now, including old people whose public contact is minimal.
If crows start to interact with us I guess we aren’t entirely alone. Speaking of old crows I saw Nancy Pelosi is speaking to reporters again.

I like crows. I find them both interesting, and entertaining...:)

Just a couple of years ago, researchers for the Massachusetts Turnpike Authority found over 200 dead crows near greater Boston recently, and there was concern that they may have died from Avian Flu. A Bird Pathologist examined the remains of all the crows, and, to everyone’s relief, confirmed the problem was definitely NOT Avian Flu. The cause of death appeared to be vehicular impacts.

However, during the detailed analysis it was noted that varying colors of paints appeared on the bird’s beaks and claws. By analyzing these paint residues it was determined that 98% of the crows had been killed by impact with trucks, while only 2% were killed by an impact with a car.

MTA then hired an Ornithological Behaviorist to determine if there was a cause for the disproportionate percentages of truck kills versus car kills.

The Ornithological Behaviorist very quickly concluded the cause: when crows eat road kill, they always have a look-out crow in a nearby tree to warn of impending danger.

The scientific conclusion was that while all the lookout crows could say “Cah”, none could say “Truck.”

I don’t buy this lefty feel good take on this situation. A lot of people fall for this. Several days ago there was a feel good story about a grizzly that ate only berries - which was an obvious lie.

Having lived around birds and other animals that are meat eaters I can seriously doubt the supposed motives of this crow. Crows eat anything and are meat scavengers. I’d say this bird was just testing this little guy to see if it was wounded enough to eat. Animals sense the dead and near dead. I suspect the hedge hog as sick, wounded or somehow near death which was why it was in the middle of the road to begin with. Prod any nearly dead animal, and it will move.

In person, it drags out a lot longer...:)

You have to pause in all the right places and such!

My favorite crow anecdote I read in a book as it was related by a hunter:

Every year when he went deer hunting on his property, the crows would silently follow him around, making no noise, waiting until he bagged a deer and removed the gut-pack, after which they would swoop in for the feast. That part didn’t surprise him, he figured they knew a good thing when they saw it.

What he didn’t understand is how they seemed to know the exact day the hunting season would begin. When he would come out of his back door, on day one, ready to go, the crows were ready to go as well, sitting everywhere in the trees around him, on power lines, getting ready to follow him.

What the Hell...could crows read signs or calendars??? Then he realized one year, that they figured out the first day of hunting season by watching him through his windows. As soon as he started pulling out all of his hunting gear, putting it on his dining room table, waterproofing his boots, cleaning his gun and such, the word got out in the crow world: He’s almost ready to go...be prepared to follow!
