On Saturday, November 4, 2023, New Mexico held three simultaneous gun turn-in events, also known by the Orwellian term “buyback”. Items cannot be “bought back” if they were never owned by the entity purchasing them. The events were decided on by executive order from Democratic Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham. It is unclear where the money for the gun turn-in event came from. A query to the New Mexico State Police has remained unanswered. Several cities are using money created by the Biden administration in the American Rescue Plan for gun turn-in events, “buybacks.” El Paso has dedicated $300,000 for such events. The New Mexico events handed out about $73,200 in gift cards on November 4.
Many people were disappointed with the gun turn-in events, waiting in long lines, with the gift card running out in the first hour or two. At the Albuquerque event, from krqe.com:
Participants tell News 13 that the line to get into the event was like a parking lot. “You sit in your car for an hour and a half you know for 200 dollars for one pistol, {laughs}, and you burn a lot of gas while you’re waiting too,” Ledbetter said.
State Police told gun owners they could still leave their weapons even though the money had run out. “I wasn’t going to do that and nobody else was either. Cause everybody was heading for the gate and leaving,” Morgan said.
Some tell News 13 the event should have been planned better. “The governor sponsored this thing…It didn’t go smooth. They said it was. It was just a fiasco,” Morgan said.
In Las Cruces, a participant posted on Craigslist to report their disappointment. From Las Cruces Craigslist:

Anyone who would sell their gun in a border state while our government is under enemy occupation, needs their head examined.
I understand the sentiment. But, suppose you have a dozen guns. One of them is an old shotgun with a broken hammer. Repairing the gun costs more than it is worth.
The government then offers to pay you $300 for the worthless gun.
Turning in the broken shotgun for $300 is a rational thing to do.
Just remember that the government does not make any money, they just steal it from you. Not much rational in that, in my humble opinion.
“You sit in your car for an hour and a half you know for 200 dollars for one pistol, {laughs}, and you burn a lot of gas while you’re waiting too,”
...$20 tops for gas = $180. You made your choice so suck it up buttercup.
Sounds like he may have been one of the disappointed....
Burnt gas + no card = -$20.
There are plenty of firearms out there.
that not worth the 200 or 300 dollars.
If you do not know the market yes one could lose money.
If one knows the market one makes money.
I have an old marlin .22 with a crooked barrel. I’ll trade you for $300.
“crooked barrel.”
Hey that’s one of those ..shoot around the corner models ..cool
They forgot to bring ammo I guess that the libtards don’t want any idiots in-actions to realize the nexus. Stupid is as stupid does
Or you make three quick and dirty “Slam” shotguns in your garage?
It is actually kind of hard to get rid of non-working, broken, useless firearm.
You really cannot just throw it into garbage.
These actions offer the best opportunity to do it.
People often get the money and go right away and purchase a new gun.
“Turning in the broken shotgun for $300 is a rational thing to do.”
Turning in your broken shotgun to the government (who hates us and wants us dead) is pissing on the Constitution. (respectfully submitted)
I sold a couple broken guns to the City of Baltimore at one of these scam events. Used the money to buy ammo. Like most.
Yeh, just a way to get rid of an old clunker that’s been laying around for many years. Won’t have any effect on gun violence as most are inoperable.
Our entire government is a fiasco.
These buyback programs sound like a good money making scheme. I’ve read where a working shotgun can be made from simple iron pipe fittings, a nail, spring and some wood for just a few bucks. Maybe put a spent shotgun shell in them (shot from a real gun). Those of us that are good wood workers can make the stock look like an assault rifle.
Make up a few of these and turn them in for hard cash.
I stilll believe these events just offer a chance for a perp who stole their gun to sell it and go out and steal another one.
I didn’t buy my gun from the government, so something like this wouldn’t be a “buy-back”. But if they did want to buy it, the asking price is $5-million.
