I still remember growing up with “Never again.”

The world should never forget what happened to the Jews in World War II. Those who don’t know history is bound to repeat it. History teaches us how to avoid the same scenerios.

History merely repeats itself. It has all been done before. Nothing under the sun is truly new. Sometimes people say, “Here is something new!” But actually it is old; nothing is ever truly new. (Ecclesiastes 1:9-10)

I wonder about those who think they have to ‘fix’ the problems of the world, usually without any true understanding of the real problem. If only we could convince people that Jordan Peterson is right: Is YOUR room clean?!

Elites, & anyone with power, need to understand that the world isn’t theirs to change or correct. In this world, each individual is supposed to deal with themselves. If that happened so much cruelty, pain & heartache would be avoided.

Effectively, Germany’s choices in the early 30’s were either Communism or National Socialism. I wonder how Communism would have worked out.

How about for its 80th anniversary Israel builds a memorial to the American troops that liberated Auschwitz. Never Forget!

***I wonder how Communism would have worked out.***

The same.

“Controversial problems [between Germany and Russia] did not, in my opinion, exist anywhere along the line from the Baltic Sea to the Black Sea and to the Far East. In addition, despite all the divergencies in their views of life, there was one thing common to the ideology of Germany, Italy and the Soviet Union: opposition to the capitalist democracies in the West.”—Julius Schnurre, Nazi trade rep to Russia.

“I wonder how Communism would have worked out.”

Just as many German citizens would have been killed, but this would have been forgiven and overlooked by historians.

Well, it was the Red Army that liberated Auschwitz.

I don’t know. Hitler thought the Slavs and Russians were inferior people. I don’t know what the majority of ordinary Germans thought. It is hard for two people to work together long when one thinks the other is a moron.

The Holocaust Remembrance industry didn't do much for...

The victims of the Great Leap Forward and the Cultural Revolution
The East Timorese
The victims of Pol Pot
The Rwandan Tutsis

Ok, let me try one more time. ALL were bad, all were demonic from the pit of hell. Only Jews were exterminated for being Jews.

Well, the eastern 1/3rd of Germany got to find out. The Russians kept Buchenwald and some other concentration camps up and running ... only the name and the inmate population changed.

Probably not much differently - both are Collectivist ideologies, in which the individual has no rights whatsoever. Hitler and his henchmen and collaborators murdered about 75 members of my extended family, whereas Stalin and his henchmen murdered one of my great grandfathers (then 74 and suffering from esophageal cancer), and he and his successors effectively kept 3/4 of that great grandfather’s descendants as indentured servants for 3 generations.

Screw all of the “isms,” they are just another word for dictatorship and lack of rights for all but the inner circle around the top man (and even they walk on quicksand daily).

My understanding is that the intention of "Never Again" and remembering the Holocaust is to prevent ALL future genocide and not just future genocides against Jews.

I guess I misunderstood, at least according to this essayist.
