New CCI Pistol Shotshells at SHOT Show 2024

Some new shot cartridges caught this correspondent’s eye at the CCI part of the Vista Outdoors exhibit at the SHOT Show. There were three displayed: a 10mm offering using 109 grains of #9 lead shot, a 9mm using 43 grains of Hevi Bismuth, non-lead shot, and a .38 Special using 80 grains of Hevi Bismuth, non-lead shot.

The 10mm is to satisfy those with 10mm handguns who find a shot cartridge useful for their needs. The Hevi Bismuth loads are to satisfy customers who want to be certain about their status on the law, where lead shot is prohibited. A CCI representative said most of the demand for the Hevi Bismuth loads comes from the western United States. Testing of the Hevi Bismuth loads shows comparable results to current lead loads.

This correspondent has sources who have experimented with the Tungsten Super Shot (TSS). The performance of TSS is far, far beyond lead shot. TSS is extremely dense, 18.3 grams per cubic centimeter, compared to about 11.3 grams per cubic centimeter for lead shot. TSS is about 60% more dense than lead, which gives it a tremendous ballistic advantage. TSS appears to be a natural for pistol shot cartridges, which are primarily limited by the small volumes of shot available. Because of the difference in density, a similar shot cartridge could fit in 60% more shot. Because of the combination of hardness and density, shot sizes can be dropped by at least two levels for similar terminal effects.

This correspondent asked: Why not switch to TSS? Pistol shot shells are already relatively expensive because they are produced in such small numbers. The increased cost of using TSS shot would primarily be in the cost of the shot.

CCI is not using the superior TSS shot in pistol shot cartridges because of the emotion driven "cop killer" bullet legislation bragged about by President Biden, passed when he was a senator.

Anyone who produces a shotshell for pistols using TSS is likely to be shut down by the ATF.

It is possible an exemption, as it is especially useful for sporting purposes, could be granted. It is highly unlikely under the Biden administration.

These shot shells seem to be a good choice for a home defense load.

I would love to see some data on wall penetration.

As far as Biden and his views on Cop Killer bullets, that doesn’t carry weight with me anymore.

Not that I want cops killed but that I don’t believe that Biden cares.

I’ve got the CCI 38spl 100gr #9 shot... It’s for snakes when I’m in the woods.

I’ve been looking for the 357/38Spec and 9mm Shot Cups to roll my own. They must be selling all their production of cups as finished ammo.

I like Speer bullets, my favorite bullet for 5.56x45 is Speer 70gr semi spitzer. Old bullet that was very popular in 22-250 loads. Like it because it has a square base, minimizes the protrusion inside the case. Am very cautious about using heavy bullets that are long enough to reduce case volume at the same time you are trying to increase the charge. Hard to evaluate the pressure range. (5.56 is pretty forgiving on hot loads)

...and I’ve got 38Spl with five lead discs—stacked like coins. Made in Israel. One is loaded so it’s the first shot fired.

I figure it’ll distract “the problem” to give me time to more carefully aim additional shots of 125gr.

My other “problem” is Black bears; in which case, this isn’t going to work.

Good point

I don’t believe Biden’s handlers care about cops.

It seems to me any caring the Democrats have about cops is for them to go away one way or another.

At least until Democrats are in despotic control of the nation or even better, the world.

#9 shot in a 9mm is a rat gun. What kind of joker would use that for self defense?

TSS is extremely dense, 18.3 grams per cubic centimeter, compared to about 11.3 grams per cubic centimeter for lead shot.

All of the documentation on-line puts Tungsten t 19.3 grams per cubic centimeter.

They must be using an alloyed metal to make the shot easier to manufacture.

Hopefully, Tungsten is in an alloy or coated.

I would like shotshells for my handguns for squirrels. But I would stick with lead, if possible. I would worry that Tungsten is extremely abrasive, and would easily destroy even a smooth barrel, in my understanding.

Agree. My oldest daughter lives on some acreage in a rural area. So, I gave her a Ruger single six 22 LR I had laying around to pack when out and about for terminating rats and snakes.

I would worry that Tungsten is extremely abrasive,

They did go to great lengths to point out that the shot is POLISHED.

Polished shot should not be abrasive.

“What kind of joker would use that for self defense?”

This joker would. It’s a great first shot. Any bird shot type projectiles are a great first shot for any self defense operation.

For my Judge, the first hole has a 410 bird shot. The next couple holes have 410 triple 000 buck, which equates to five 9mm lead balls. They are followed by a couple 45 long Colts.

Most shooting range rangers have never shot at a target that shoots back. In the case of a self defense gun fight that first shot counts, and one’s aim will be poor at best. With the first shot being bird shot, I can hit a man size target at 40 feet in a cowboy style quick draw shoot from the hip shot. About 10 of those little pellets will pepper the perp.

The pain and bleeding should cause a distraction allowing for a careful aim with the 000 buck. These critters have a spread of 8 - 12 inches at 40 feet and are very lethal. And the 45’s will give a through and through.

And I don’t do conventional shooting stances such as the Weaver. Unless you are wearing body armor, exposing your full frontal body mass as a target for your opponent to shoot at is just plain stupid.

Me too.

Tried some shot shells in a 22 rifle.

The balls in a 22 shot shells are very small.

I believe that the shot in a 10 mm would be substantially larger and being Tungsten would have much better penetration.
