The Guild 3-3-2004 Political Ghost Story
Post Gazette ^ | Dennis Roddy

Edited on 04/13/2004 2:35:34 AM PDT by Jim Robinson. [history]

It happened at the annual Lincoln Day Dinner of the Allegheny County Republican Party, March 20, 1991, at the William Penn Hotel.

At the time the first George Bush was still flush with victory in the Persian Gulf, and dinnergoers chortled over a videotaped presentation of assorted senate Democrats backpedaling in the wake of a war they'd opposed. Ted Kennedy was shown. News clips were shown. But for Kerry, the speaker simply read the two letters, to everyone's amazement.

What the heck, I'm feeling tabloidish. Must be the lack of sleep. Anyway, I've checked out a NY gossip site called "gawker stalker," where New Yawkers send in celebrity sightings, and have been getting some chuckles from stuff like this:

Please note: by popular demand, Ian Klaus, paramour of Chelsea Clinton, is hereby banned from Gawker Stalker. ...

· just saw chelsea clinton wandering around the measly produce section at the 22nd and park avenue associated supermarket looking all sorts of dowdy and confused in her sidwell friends sweatshirt as she gazed at the red peppers. following her around was her greasy-haired boyfriend looking pretty smug as he saw me notice her. [Ed. HIS NAME MUST NOT BE SPOKEN. AND AVERT YOUR EYES.] ....

· "I just ate lunch at Angelika’s Kitchen and Senator John Kerry was there. He had bread with spread and some steamed vegetables and tofu. Took a fig bar to go. [What, no Philly cheesesteak?] ....

· "I sat next to Betsey Johnson (designer) at Pastis in the meat packing district. She was with two obvious sycophants who were drooling all over her, despite the fact that she looked beyond horrid in a multicolored coat that looked like a leprechaun had vomited on it. She had terrible hair with nylon-looking extensions and black raccoon eye makeup. Didn't smell great either." ....

· "8:45 am today saw Monica Lewinsky at the 26th St. flea market (she shops there fairly often). looks a hell of a lot better after the make-up and clothing people get through with her on mr. personality. either that or the director and camera people are doing a terrific job" ....

Here's another offering from a Gawker reader:

Maybe I'm not reading the sarcasm in your item about young Ms. Clinton, but all I know is that at the college I went to she once came for a weekend to visit her then-boyfriend. The [identity] of her boyfriend was interesting, because:

· He was a cokehead, and
· He was gay.

Yes, she was there; I saw her with my own two eyes, with the supposed boyfriend. At any rate, it raises a few interesting questions, doesn't it?

I saw a story about Chelz in the Gawker Stalker a few days ago but now I can't find it. It said that Chelz was walking into her office, her hair straight, business suit and looked so regular the Stalker almost didn't notice her.

I've discovered who will play Horse in the next Dudley Do Right movie.

Six-year-old Iris Kerry Kaler, left, notices her uncle, Sen. John Kerry (news - web sites) on television while watching polling returns with Peggy Kerry, John Kerry's sister, Tuesday, March 2, 2004 in New York. Supporters had plenty to celebrate after hearing news that opponent Sen. John Edwards (news - web sites) had dropped out of the race. (AP Photo/Julie Jacobson)

Oh my, I think we're gonna have fun with GAWKER-STALKER, lol.

Speaking of Chels, I must say that young lady can sure stretch a dollar...Her salary is "only" $135,000 (reportedly) yet she not only lives in a fancy Manhattan apartment with a uniformed doorman but now she is hiring a public relations firm to hype up her image? Too bad she doesn't read FR. We have offered her many tips in past on how to improve her image, i.e.

1. Do not ever wear bikinis in public. Even if you lose weight, you cannot change your shape.
2. Do not get rip-roaring drunk in public. If you do, no dancing on tabletops at bars.
3. Dump Ian and find a manly looking guy who does not resemble your "daddy".

I missed it on the tellie last night. :-(

"I believe this administration just helped overthrow, basically overthrow, a democratically elected president," Vanessa Kerry, 27, said during a campaign stop at Stony Brook University. "We basically, in our silence, allowed him to be deposed."

Basically bless her heart.

Terror in France:

Paris-AP -- The French government admits it's being blackmailed by a terrorist group.

France says the group is threatening to blow up railway tracks within days unless it's paid millions of dollars in ransom.

The group identifies itself as A-Z-F -- the same initials as those of a chemical factory that exploded three years ago in southern France.

Government officials are taking the threat seriously. Last month, they found explosives buried in a rail-bed in central France.

The government had asked the media not to report the blackmail effort, to protect negotiation attempts with the terrorist group.

But the story leaked out, and is being confirmed by the Interior Ministry.

More Frenchie news:

PARIS, March 2 (AFP) - Families of British, German and French prisoners held at the US Guantanamo Bay detention camp will travel to the United States this week to appeal to the president for their release, a French politician said Tuesday.

Urging stronger French action to obtain their release, communist parliamentary deputy Andre Gerina told journalists: "We want the French authorities to end their embarrassed silence.

"The seven Frenchmen held illegally in Guantanamo must be allowed to return home to France." [What a good idea in light of terrorists holding France hostage and all]

Gerina is also mayor of Venissieux, home town of two French detainees, Mourad Benchellali and Nizar Sassi.

Gerina will travel this Saturday to Washington DC with Sassi's family, together with three British families and one German family on a trip organised by the Commission for Guantanamo Human Rights, recently set up in London.

Former British hostage in Lebanon Terry Waite [???] will be in the group, which will also visit United Nations headquarters in New York.

British actor Corin Redgrave, brother of the actress Vanessa Redgrave, who helped to set up the prisoners' rights group, told journalists here the delegation would submit families' letters to the White House and address an appeal directly to President George W. Bush on the prisoners' fate.

The team is also planning to meet Democratic Party presidential hopeful John Kerry, who has criticised the US-led invasion of Iraq.[Yipeee! More bad news for Kerry]

"Our message is very simple," Redgrave told journalists: "America has given the world a model of democracy which is founded on the rule of law, on fundamantal human rights, including the right to fair trial, the right to silence."

"Guantanamo offers an alternative model to the world, a model where no rights are sustained."

He warned of the danger that Guantanamo would be a model for more and more countries to copy.

About 660 men have been detained at the Guantanamo US naval base, most of them captured in Afghanistan since the September 11 attacks on the United States in 2001.

So far, 88 detainees have been released and 12 have been transferred to their home countries for continued detention.

Attorneys of two of the Frenchmen held noted that British, Russian and Danish detainees had been released, but the French prisoners were still being held.

"The French government has distinguished itself by complete inaction," said lawyer Jacques Debray: "Although no charges have been preferred against the French, there is no indication of their early release."

A second lawyer, William Bourdon, suggested the French prisoners might be "collateral damage" in strains in French-US relations after France criticised the invasion of Iraq.

You'd think with all the money Kerry has, er, uh.... Teresa has, Kerry could afford to fix his sister's teeth.

Bug update:

Terminix just left and, yes, they're termites (yikes!) but not the bad Formosan kind. Just your basic, nasty, insomnia-inducing termites. The good news is he said

A) we caught them very early because the studs still feel surprisingly strong. And

B) I shouldn't worry about them travelling sideways and getting into my hardwood floors. They always travel straight up, meaning they're likely confined to the one little corner in the laundry from which they swarmed.

Now I (and you) know more than we never wanted to know about termites. Bah!
